Pulled trigger on diablo 7222 - r. Mainly to disble afm/dfm, read codes and change tire size.

Kind of wondering if programmers when used with canned tunes can damage engine or lead to premature wear/problems? How safe are these newer programmers assuming you dont go trying to customize a tune?

Havent seen much posted on the programmer but i can report back how it works if anyone interested.

I’m interested! Tell me more. Is it worth the $600+ ???  Can u tell the difference? What was the down time?

I had a Hypertech on my last truck and loved it. Gave it (from what Hypertech said) a +27HP difference from stock with all stock parts. I had exhaust and S&B intake and it would let loose the 22s at 30 if I stepped on it. Set governor to 130 also. Went in for service switched it back over and never had an issue.  The nice thing was it only cost $325!

Thanks

Ok. Sounds good. Keep me and everyone posted. Congrats. Take care.

I'd be interested on your feedback as well. I've been thinking on going this route to address the couple codes from headers.

I bought a back-up ECM to tune, as I couldn't do without my truck, even for a few days.

We’ll got it back and plugged it in, few hiccups but all is good now.. the Diablo guys helped get everything sorted out

What does a replacement ECM cost?  It might be better to buy a second unit to avoid the downtime and expensive shipping costs.

It specifically says on Diablo's website you have to send your ORIGINAL ECM, you can't send them a different ECM. You can't swap another ECM into your truck as a backup either as it will freak out having a different VIN in the ECM than the other computers in the truck. I see the rest of the Holley owned companies now offer the same setup.

Also the chip shortage probably makes it nearly impossible to get an ECM.

I picked up the ECU for $250 and would have it reflashed to my vin.

I can always resell it if nothing else, but having it to tune, whichever route I decide to take is far better than not having the truck to drive for me.

HPtuners vs. Diablo looks to be an expensive decision either way and weighing out the pros/cons, since I've had discussion with local tuner, on the HPtuner side and prior to looking into this Diablo option.

HP Tuners does a hack job and bypasses the encrypted chip in the ECU with an older non encrypted one. Diablo Sport actually cracked the encryption so it's all software based.

I wouldn't call it a hack, that's a perfectly good way to get around that feature. It's no different than doing that stuff to PC computers.

Did you speak with an engineer at Diablo to see how they doing it?

The C8's are still on lock down for now because it's like a rolling code encryption that GM has.

The older chip isn't as powerful as the new encrypted ones from what I was told by a person from Livernois which is why I would call it a hack. Lingenfelter is using this in their tuning attempts. Livernois is working on cracking the software encryption. I haven't spoken to anyone from Diablo but did some research on how they were managing to bypass the encryption and it requires some special equipment to bypass which is why you have to send in your ECU to them. Then you can use the hand held unit to program like you would the older vehicles.

    • I did the new thermostat after doing a 'flip' for a year. Runs as cool one way as the other in the summer but in the winter there is a bit of a floor. Yellow with the new 70 C thermostat. My data over the life of the unit to date. Still need more cooler. Anyway that floor helped both winter fuel economy and shift quality in the winter. I found it a good balance.
    • Evan Williams Bottled in Bond   So pouring the last of a bottle of Evan Williams Black label last night I set off the the state store for a refill only to be denied the by an empty shelf. Rats.    What the did have was a bottle of Evan Williams Bottled in Bond. 100 proof. Hum, a few bucks more but a known distiller. Lets have a swing at it. ( I have before )    Cracked it open and pour a serving over ice. Hum.... more heat, yes. More alcohol naturally. But the barreling not the proof brings the taste and this one came up short.    Oh is was familiar but the heat ran the barrel over like a Peterbilt runs over a squirrel. Could use a heavier toasting of the oak me thinks or perhaps a longer barreling. Who knows. But what I can say is ice or a water back isn't the answer. What kills one kills them both. Sad. It is a pleasant drink....if you have little to compare it to.
    • I've had exactly one set of Bridgestone. Lasted five year and 125,000 miles and had I known better 15oK would have been a cake walk. I would have bought a like set had they not tripled in price since the first set. I removed them at said mileage with 5/32" remaining in dead even wear all four. They were fuel efficient, quite, comfortable and predictable.    Early on I got a very good alignment checked at least once a year, sometimes twice; kept the tires properly inflated, balanced and rotated. And I've found that many a tire issue can be avoided with great maintenance practices. Lot's of tire dealers will do rotation and balance (simple) for free for as long as you own the tire they sold you so no excuse not to.    Bead prep, alloy integrity and stem health have a huge impact on inflation stability. There are more mountings done poorly that perfectly. Finding a good tire guy is gold and as important as finding a tire you like.    That 3X price increase now two sets of "other tires' later is starting look like a bargain.      Bad maintenance kills more tires than bad tires.
    • Atlas, you kill me As aggravating as a project like this can be you have been unable to hide your fascination with learning and using that angst against this beast like a Ninjitsu Master. It amuses you, admit it now.      BTW, love your writing style. 😉
    • I gotta say, I'm enjoying your narration. The troubles you've been having are amusing as you describe them. It's good to see that you're finally getting some satisfaction out the old beast though.
