Greetings,

I have a GMC AT4 with 28K miles on it.  I noticed a pulsating in the brakes under load when driving downhill from the mountains here in Colorado around 18K miles or so.  I don't pull anything heavy, just normal expressway driving.  It got so bad when coming down from the mountains a month ago that I finally took it into my dealer here in Denver.  They have diagnosed the problem as both front rotors are warped and need to be replaced, which they say is not covered under my 36K mile bumper to bumper warranty.  Any recommendations before I go off on them?

Check your warranty. Either the rotors are covered or not. If covered, they will fix them. If not covered, no need to go off on anyone except maybe yourself for agreeing to a warranty that does not cover rotors.

At 28K rotors are not covered, you can say all day long that you didn't heat up the brakes and they did it on their own, or they shouldn't have this early but they have no way of telling that you didn't ride the brakes down a hill and heat them up real bad, or towed a heavy load and heated them up, it's basically a wear item. You can go off on them and they could possibly give you courtesy warranty repair but I highly doubt it. I'd just replaces them and put on new pads and move on if it were me.

You need to change your driving style.  I've lived all over, including Colorado.  Pulled trailers big and small, up and down mountains.  In all of the trucks I've ever owned (over a dozen) I've never warped a rotor.  I put over 130K on one Silverado and it had the original pads on it when I sold it.

Rotors and pads are considered a normal wear item. They are not covered under warranty unfortunately. Going off on the dealer for that is just going to get you mad when they say no and piss them off possibly not doing a good job to fix it.

Some times not your driving habits or trailer pulling could be something as simple as miss-Torqued wheel lugs, Make sure wheel lugs are hand torqued or at least use a torque stick. Just another possiblity thats out there. Under and Over torqued wheels can warp rotors too.

Whatever you do  "DO NOT BUY AFTERMARKET ROTORS" as 99.9% of them suck and will warp far easier then OEM ones in my opinion. One of the few OEM parts that you are better off sticking with imo.

If the dealer says your rotors are warped, then maybe they are warped, but...

On my 2007 Yukon I have always had what felt like warped rotors when coming down a steep grade and on the brakes heavy.  No teeth rattling vibration, but very distinct pulsating, stronger the harder I stand on the brake.  The reason for my mild skepticism on the dealers findings is I have replaced my rotors once (normal service life on the truck) and the pulsating still is there on steep downgrades.

I haven't noticed it on my new Sierra AT4, but can't remember really standing on the brakes on a steep grade yet.

    • This is a really late reply but I just found this thread. They won't sell the hinges. I've gone 7 rounds with them. Their solution is to buy a new cover. I'm about to buy a new cover and it won't be a Bakflip. It also won't be from realtruck.com.
    • Yes, and also pulling heavy trailers or a large camper up steep grades as well as descending grades such as the more rustic off road camping locations and using engine braking with that low gearing as well as soft ground can just suck the power . I realize pickups these days tend to have an over all lower first gear ratio compared to automatic transmission pickups from years back so that has helped a lot in its ability in high range but there comes a point if in four wheel drive the torque runs out at the wheels, certainly with a gas engine. They don't put two speed transfer cases on pickups for a cool factor, they have a function if one needs that massive torque to the wheels that high range can't deliver.
    • Notes 7/18/2026   3,400 miles on this batch of Mobil 1 Euro 5W40 since the GDI pump replacement. Alcohol runs very clean when ring seal is tight and the sump isn't getting hosed with fuel. Checked oil level at fill up today as is my practice and grabbed a white Kleenex to look at the color. What color?  I was going to change it but.....
    • 4 low is really nice on steep boat ramps.
    • Interesting, I suspect I would have fueled up in Lee Vining as the day prior I would have filled up either in Laughlin or near there and maybe again before I entered Death Valley and once out the other side late that evening as I kept on driving into the night up near Lee Vining. Next morning I most likely fueled up in LV before heading over Tioga Pass into ( as I refer to it as "Yose .... Mite" 😁 ). And again that was 19 years ago but the price then must not have jumped out at me like the 5 bill a gallon theme of nutty cult hippy country Big Sir or head so far up their rear Aspen. I'd be curious to know where the highest prices are in the lower 48, I probably would not be far off to guess somewhere in Cali forn ie. Coldfoot and Prudhoe bay may have those prices beat but that is a whole other world up there and when prices are more normal elsewhere that is about what they can be up there I believe in no mans land. Anyway interesting that the 395 corridor is hosing people and the thing is, its tourist season and its not like there are a lot of competition options when driving up that highway from what I could see. Yup, big ole Boaterhomes and various other RV's ahead and behind me at the Yosemite entrance gate and they have to get their fuel somewhere.
