Hello. I just bought a 2008 Silverado 4dr 2wd 5.3l. The original owner sold it due to it not starting. Was not a repeating issue, but one day it would not turn over. He took it to a questionable shop and they just said it must be electrical....that's it. Fully charged battery(tried boosting too), turn the key, at first very little comes up on the dash. Soon after I get the common gauges etc. No crank at all. Checked voltage at both ends of ground wire, both good. I do not get a line under any shift positions on the display, no matter what position I put the shifter in. I would love pointers for trouble shooting from here. I am more mechanical than electrical, but willing to learn and try anything. New starter has been installed after no start issue.

Sounds like the Automatic Transmission Manual Shift Shaft Position Switch is bad, the truck thinks its in gear not allowing it to turn over even though you have it in park or neutral.

I imagine there is a relay (or more than 1) is involved.

Any COMPETENT shop would use a trouble shooting chart from GM or at least a generic one. Usually the first culprit is a bad starter circuit; ie, the problem lies within the starter circuit, there could be LOTS of reasons it won't start like a roll over switch, this switches turn off the (at least) the ignition if the truck rolls over, this way the engine won't continue to run upside down a condition the engine wasn't intended to operate in. To know all the possibilities and to check them against specs. a professional mechanic will use a check list from the manufacturer or tech data supplier. get a check list and a VOM (volt, ohm meter) Cheap ones can be had for under $10.00, get a better one; they will usually survive a few drops.

you could try jumping the starter relay, that will tell you if the problem is in the starter circuit or in the starter disable system, ie neutral switch, ignition switch etc. relay schematic is on the relay. indicator switch failure is the most common glitch, its on the side of the trans and exposed to the elements

Have it scan for codes - bet it the B1019-3A & B1370-06

I think it is more global than just starting circuit. I'd do a quick ground verification with some jumper cables, ground the engine and chassis to the battery.

I also had a n alternator short circuit internally. No amount of jumping or boosting the battery would let it start... But it did make a really hot battery cable that burned the $hit out of my finger.

Well, for starting an engine - step one is for the motor to turn over. If that doesn't happen - nothing else matters. So I would chalk all 4 tires front and back, turn the ignition on, and then bumper the starter solenoid with a screw driver. If that didn't turn the motor over, then I would run jumper cables from a known good battery directly to the starter. If it turns over and doesn't start, I would check spark. If it has spark - throw some starting fluid at it. Then just go from there.
