Hey guys, new to the forum but don't know if this belongs here. I am looking at used trucks I have been looking at the 2019 ram 1500, and the 2019 chevy 1500. Anyone who has a '19 what do you think? Only concerns I have is the interior quality, seems much better on the ram, and also the new 5.3 has 17 different cylinder cut off modes, not a big fan of that, feel like they wont last long. Considering when v4 mode was in introduced in 2013, it was hard on lifters and what not. I can only imagine with 17! Anyways Hopefully someone can chime in. I have always owned GM my current truck is a '07 silverado classic.

Had a 19 LTZ 6.2 10 speed and have a Ram now. There was a lot to like and a lot to dislike on the Chevy. Overall it was a great driving truck and that’s mainly why I bought it. Powertrain, steering, brakes, handling were all much better than Ram. Interior was obviously worse, but very functional and well laid out. DFM is extremely smooth and works much more seamlessly than the old AFM and the Hemi MDS.

Being a first year truck, the 19s do have some issues so proceed with caution. If it has a sliding rear window, check it over for cracks in the frame, previous repairs (sealant in the window channel beneath the roof spoiler), and stains on the headliner. Or better yet, get one with a solid rear window. The sliding window leaks are extremely well documented. We are now near the time where the older and/or higher mileage 2019s are no longer under the bumper to bumper warranty. You don’t want to have to deal with this problem out of pocket after you just bought it.

The 8 speed also had some issues but there was an updated fluid used in trucks built after March? of 2019 that apparently smoothed things out. Most people are happy with theirs.

Ultimately you could make a strong case for either brand. Compromises will need to be made somewhere. Keep in mind the Ram was also a first year truck for 2019. I’m sure there were plenty of issues there too.

How is the resale value of the GM tuck vs the Dodge truck equipt similiar? I went through the same thing back in 2008 with a Gm/Dodge dilema and the Gm on those model held resale value better for the model I was looking at, helped me choose and was happy with my 2006 till just last july when I traded it for a 2021 GM.

I figured they would have their issues, just wanted to see if anyone had had trouble with the cylinder mode cut offs. That's really the only thing that may deter me from the chevy. How is chevy compared to ram support wise? Such as warranty or service? I have heard ram isn't very good at best for customer service. Since you have owned both maybe you have some experiamce with that? Thank you again for your response

I had a 2019 Ram that I traded for my 2021 GMC . The only reason I traded out for the GMC was because my Ram had 45 k miles and that’s when I trade out of all my trucks, which is about every 2 years. The Ram was great, never an issue, plenty of power, rode great , loved the truck. Also, I love the GMC. It has more options then my Ram did, and so far it’s been great. In my opinion it’s a flip of the coin, don’t know if there is a bad decision to be made. There is no such thing as a perfect truck, they all have likes and dislikes. Good luck.

A lot of that just comes down to the dealer. I always had a good experience with the warranty service visits on the Chevy. I wish there hadn’t been so many of them, but that’s another story. Ram hasn’t had to go in yet but I bought it from the same chain of dealers and would expect similar customer service.

Never had any cylinder deactivation issues, nor have I heard of any widespread issues specific to the DFM system in the 2019s. There were some bad batches of valve springs and lifters, but that was in the 2020s IIRC.

I have a 2019 High Country with 6.2L/10 spd it did have the rear window leak but at 100 miles it went in and the dealership took care of it. Now 31k miles and still dry🤞🤞.  The 2019’s also had rattling issues behind the dash and in the center console area. All of mine were taken care of right at 12k miles. They pulled much of the front dash area apart and took care of them, so for the past “almost 20k” miles it’s been very quiet. I love the power of the 6.2L and the smoothness of the 10 speed. Stepdad has a 2020 GMC with 5.3L and 10 speed and he loves his as well. The 5.3L behaves/performs very well for the “as stated” 355 HP/383 TQ ratings. He averages around 22-24mpgs depending where he drives.  I average around 19-20mpgs depending on where I go.

My best friend and my son’s god father had a 2019 Ram and now a 2022 Ram. He loved them both. Loves the ride and interior quality of the truck. I drove it and was impressed by how well it rode because of the coil over suspension plus air ride. The power was ok, nothing compared to 6.2L but almost similar to the 5.3L. He can’t get the gas mileage. He is in the 18-19 mpgs. And his new one has the “e-Torque”

I think like others have stated that they are both good trucks and you could either have a great experience like others have or unfortunately have a $h!tty experience like others have as well.

Good luck with your decision!

Here is my experience with my 2019 Silverado LTZ. Had the trans fluid flushed and reprogram done to address known shifting concerns, all covered under TSB / warranty. No other issues, love the truck and would buy one all over again.
