GM decided to cover my oil lines in full. 99,200 miles just fyi in case anyone needs them replaced be sure to press for that 100k power train warranty. Oil lines and associated hardware and labor are listed as covered.

The gasser only comes with a 60k mile power train warranty.

While somewhat useless to mention this at the low miles I have on my truck which is around 600 ( I plan to drop the oil on it before its driven further ) I have not observed the oil drop at all since it was new. Mind you I had 100 miles on it by the time I had it home to park it in the exact spot it is now to accurately check the level but had checked it as it sat level in the show room and read the same. Its about 1/8 of an inch above the full line. Time will tell with more miles on an oil change and for the present I decided to buy some Mobil 1 Truck and SUV 5W-30 as it came on sale at "Crappy Tire".

Speaking of pouring oil into the L8T engine at time of changing oil or if one needed to add some oil, I had ordered a funnel kit  not long ago from Lisle which has the funnel, an elbow to get the right angle for the L8T so the funnel sits upright, and the various adapters that come with it and yes one is for the GM/Ford style and it screws in just like the oil cap. Since the funnel has a top cap and bottom cap its possible to cap off both ends to keep debris out and also throw into a plastic bag to be sure it stays clean. I just used it today for the first time on my truck and it seemed to work slick, way better then the conglomeration of what I had temporarily used initially. There are cheaper alternatives to this brand but the concept works and way less chance of spilling oil vs some funnel that was never made for the poorly thought out angle of the oil fill port.

114.00 for funnels? Wow. The 12 dollar lisle right angle funnel works awesome for this truck.

I had thought about the funky funnel by Lisle which I think is the one you are referring to but the price was considerably more than what you paid, when I realized I could get this funnel kit for just over 80.00 Canadian through a certain local supplier ( far less than what the USD MSRP is on that funnel set ) I decided to spend the extra and get it as it caps off both ends and won't have to wash it out each time. Ironically right after this unit came in, I then discovered Princess had a unit they were selling on a clearance sale that never came up in a prior search and it was marked down to 20.00 ... oh well, a bit too late by then but I bought it too so I can throw it in the truck if I am on a trip and ever needed to add oil. Its not the same quality unit but it it should work fine too, just how things played out when I was searching and not finding much for alternatives on this side of the border. There were all sorts of things I could find in the states but made zero sense to try and order as I would have paid many times the price with all the skimming with shipping and brokerage etc.  GM could have come up with a design that incorporated an elbow so the inlet faced up so any funnel would have worked, poorest designed fill port I've ever worked with over all the vehicles and farm equipment over the years.

Here's a minor update. Last oil change was 3/7/25 @ 59,261. No longer using this truck as my daily driver, its only driven when "truck" abilities are needed. That said, checked oil on 6/17/25 before a camping trip and it was a qt low. At that time milage was about 60,518. This still falls below the threshold that GM says is normal (1 qt per 100 gallons of fuel). Here is a screenshot of us  driving home southbound on I37 outside San Antonio to Corpus......Now before I get ridiculed for driving too fast I really don't see an issue driving the speed limit while towing. The traffic was minimal and there is absolutely no sway but the MPG's are insanely low!!! This may not be the right place to ask this but does anyone else get this type of fuel mileage??? My camper is not heavy but it guess it likes to catch wind. Truck constantly down shifts on minor hills, I tend to keep it in L5 that way I can lock it in 4th to minimize shifting with the press of a button, then back to L5 for straightaways.

The low mileage issue is "You're driving too fast".  There is a massive mpg difference if you slow down, and I mean massive compared to 4.5mpg.

When the truck in the past was driven without the trailer and from the starting point of a fresh oil change, what distance was it able to obtain before being down one quart ?. 

 

I've been on that stretch of highway once and heading northbound but its so many years ago and most of the drive was at night but isn't that a fairly flat stretch of highway ?. South bound you would drop 700 feet between those two cities and at those low elevations is where I have found vehicles to get the best fuel mileage, if all else is equal with fairly flat ground and no headwind vs high elevation. But speed with a high wind resistance unit, that kills fuel economy and the amount of power required is vastly higher than if one was idling along at 55 to 60 mph with the same unit.

I would love to see the oil and trans fluid temperatures running like that. MPG would be the last of my worries.

Not sure what oil temp was but I monitor trans temp at it was steady at 196 degrees. It does creep up to 206 in stop and go traffic but comes back down. While driving without a trailer its usually around 185-190.

Since this was my daily driver up until recently, a few times that I have gone between oil changes without towing and in those circumstances I do not have major oil consumption. It maybe consumed a quart after 6K miles which is typical in my experience. Even in my previous trucks with the 5.3L their was some oil consumption. The trip back is mostly flat and going southbound is "downhill". The slight incline for overpasses causes the truck to downshift which is why I lock out 5th and 6th sometimes.

More cooler to bring the temperature down under 175 F, preferably 160 F, during your heaviest/hardest/worse case tow would lengthen it's life by multiples. Not meaning to step on toes with unsolicited advice but I feel for machines. :)

Based on the 2000 samples in the SPEEDiagnostix database, increasing the oil viscosity in these engines, even those run on the track, showed no significant difference in results.   The smoking gun was in the oil chemistry. That is where the data shows higher instances of more wear. Molybdenum was the key; the higher the amount, the less the wear. Speed postulates that higher viscosity oils have more thickeners to artificially inflate their viscosity numbers. These thickeners lose viscosity under shear, and the result is that not all oils of the same viscosity have the same shear stability.   Having enough viscosity is the most important characteristic, but according to Speed, once that required viscosity level is reached, additive chemistry matters more than additional viscosity. Speed also states, oil pressure problems on the racetrack aren’t a viscosity problem; it’s an oiling system problem. Running a thicker oil is just a band-aid for an underlying oiling system problem.
    • Can it still be Assembled II?   Viscosity on the decline by various means. Heat on the rise making that worse. Engine RPM in the tank. Smaller motors with more boost trying to emulate an electric motor. Full torque, zero rpm. Then we will triple the OCI. Argh.    But wait....there is more. LSPI has pushed a shift from Ca to Mg and as that cost more PLUS the run to lower sulfur compounds the TBN is moving in the wrong direction for the increased OCI's demanded.    That not being enough to placate a demand for a parameter they can't measure the other sulfur bearing compounds are also under attack. That would be zinc and phosphorus sulfonate compounds. To some degree those are being replaced with boron esters and others, i.e. titanium ect. All of which have shorter service lives. And there there is the "Secrete Sauce" marketing for AW adds that 'Can't be detected by UOA's" but trust me because I (the blenders) never ever lie.    Spoiler alert; ALL additives are sacrificial! Smaller amounts of the old blended with less robust versions of the new do not equal longer service lives. So what are the blenders recommending? Wait for it.......   MOVING THE GOAL POSTS! OMG      Let's declare the long standing TAN/TBN crossover irrelevant and tell people that soot is a great 'graphite' based lubricant which can aid tribo films. Wait, what? Let's declare that the standards used for oxidation and nitration were to conservative and can be expanded. Let's tell them that because GDI fuel dilution, although being a VISCOSITY KILLER and an acid generator is actually okay because we have better base oils that limit viscosity failure limits. (Said knowing this is measured in fractions of a centipoise and in bases not commonly used in shelf oils)   Lying from the heart is not just the new normal but we have a public, a very young public, that is so ignorant of the facts and so sure of their "RESEARCH" into AI driven models base in regurgitated  instead of scientific research based unvarnished, peer reviewed FACTS that the incoming guard is loosing their grip on reality and the OEM's are tickled pink while the blends bend the knee.    You have an ever limited set of tools to work with. And sooner or later those will be taken from you as the API and the EPA strangle the last remaining fluids from the system. What you have left is your wits. If you care to use them.    At some point in the very near future it will not longer be possible to do "What is best for the machine", and be replaced with "The best you have access too". You WILL be rewarded with half the life and twice the cost. That isn't that hard to predict.         
    • I trust you saw the other comment where he knew what he was talking about !. Yes, these darned newer vehicles with all their so smart they are stupid technology, goes and drains the battery down. As you might see my other comment, I installed a Noco 5 battery tender under the hood and at this point still have the cord routed so I have to lift the hood and then plug it in but am typically parked in a garage or a shed so its not risking the engine hood in the wind. That way I am assured or hopefully so of not finding I have a battery drawn down and can't even start the truck and that also damages the battery to draw it down too far. 
    • I guess no surprise my guesses were wrong !, at least now I know if I ever happen to see it grayed out in my own truck as to what is going on.    I never happened to catch my truck with it grayed out, it seemed every time I would test to see if there was an update it never found anything and yet more than once I would check to see if there was an update and there was nothing, then a day later or even that same morning I would drive to town and after more than one engine shut down in town as I did my errands it would pop up that there is an update now ready to install and the only place I have a connection to the internet is at home by wifi so its not as if it grabbed the download while driving. I don't trust these new vehicles due to all the crap they can decide to do while sitting for some days not running and run the battery down so most of the time if I know the truck will sit for a few days I plug in the battery tender I have mounted under the hood and so the only time the truck must have downloaded software was when it was sitting in the garage where the signal is awful but I have that tender plugged in and somehow it managed to download it. I honestly detest all this crap, way to easy to leave a person stranded.    Since I don't trust any of it I don't do the install of the already downloaded software until I get home and sometimes have even sat in the truck to watch what its doing as its going through the process to its conclusion as its not like it is set up that it will tell you the next time you fire up the engine that the update that was initialed actually installed or installed properly. Yes I can go into the updates and see the list. After I go through the install where I feel its safe to do so in case it breaks down as a result, I will plug in the battery tender after the fact to recharge as I don't know how much power its taking just to do the install and that can take a while for it to install. 
    • Thanks for the reply. All settings were correct and the engine was off, as it was supposed to be. It turned out to be something simple. I took a drive for about an hour. I must have had a low battery without knowing it. The voltage gauge on the display looked ok. At the end of my drive, I shut off the engine and the update prompt came up and it updated normally. It’s ironic because one of the features of the update is a reduction of battery drain.
