About a year or so ago Red Line reformulated their 0w20 and 0w30 grades to be LSPI friendly.  Essentially they went to your Mg and Calcium combo rather than high calcium.  Noack is extremely good across the Red Line grades.

 

They have the 0w20 Noack at 5%, which seems too good to be true.

Virgin oxidation values suggest that the formulation has an ester component.  The oxidation value doesn't necessarily mean that the formulation contains more or less of a specific ester.  What's interesting though is both Red Line and Valvoline Premium Blue Restore both contain a good amount of POE and both have high oxidation values.  Amsoil is up there too around 50-65 depending on the grade.  HPL is around 20-30 and I believe they use POE and AN.

Didn't watch it, no reason to. One instance does not prove anything.

Does this fall under cherry picked info?

One instance of what? If the teacher asks you for your hall pass, can she send you to the office once you produce it because it is but one instance in which you had it and you may not have some other instance?

Actually, the top end and pan looked remarkable. The pistons however were horrid. 3,700-mile (6K km) OCI's on Klondike 0W20 full synthetic Dexos1Gen2. Really horrid. Motor used oil, rings packed and stuck and skirts/bores badly worn and one wristpin looking for an exit ramp. Motor had been making pin noise for a few thousand. So, he took a look. He doesn't seem surprised. If fact he believes this is 'normal'. Motor swaps are common for 'Clacky' motors. It was never overheated. Never run out of oil. Serviced on the severe schedule.   

 

Short OCI, Dexos oil of specified SAE grade and classification, adult professionally driven and an abject failure. This car is one of a fleet of his delivery vehicles he services and maintains.  He buys oil by the barrel. Filters by the case. WIX filters.

Look at the virgin oxidation value of Red Line 0w40.  122.  It's said though that the oxidation value can tell you the presence of an ester, but you can't quantify how much.  There does seem to be a correlation though.

 

I think AN's are a better base stock though the more I read about them.  Or combination of POE and AN.

I just watched it.  Goes to show that when you see a clean engine that doesn't mean the pistons are clean LOL.

It's a very strong correlation. Strong enough to hang your hat on. Now that said it is not indicative of the formulations Aniline Point. A better measure of solvency. AN's will not show as oxidation but will really suppress the Aniline Point.

And the point I was trying to make for those that like dry oils and yet have clean top ends. I can only set the water before the horse. 

 

Jury is out on the Valvoline R&P. Just may be an outlier if this 'novel' chemistry is what it says it is.

You're right.  For years I would see a clean engine and assume everything else was clean.  Nope.  I was wrong on that for sure.
