As the title suggest, has anyone upgraded the backup camera to a better camera with more clarity?   Is that an option?   My older car has a cleaner backup picture than the truck.

I just ordered one from ADCmobile for my 2016 Sierra.  Current one’s lens is scratched.  Looking forward to being able to see my backup camera more clearly with higher definition too.  I called ADCmobile before I ordered and talked to a real nice guy right away without going through the usual “press 1 for English” … or any other computer prompts.  He answered a question I had and said it takes less time to install than the time we were on the phone.  Thanks to Rock1500 for asking the question.  The camera’s been bugging me for over a year and never considered that there was an easy was to replace it.

It seems like the ADC camera is the exact same one as this

I saw this one a while ago and had been himming and hawing getting it. IMHO, the factory reverse cam is only worthwhile during clear daytime weather. At night, it is difficult to see the images and if damp out, the images get washed out. Kind of defeats the purpose of it. GM could have installed better cameras...

Just had this conversation with a bud that has a 16 2500hd Denali diesel loaded compaired to my 18 chevy 1500 ltz.  Both trucks have Low Quality Back Up Camera's compaired to my wife's 19 Jeep Cherokee and son's Ford F-150.  Other than Increased Profits, I am not sure why GM has choosen such below average cameras.

I've been nothing but happy with mine. Still not as clear as some of the brand new HD vision systems, but a worthwhile upgrade in my opinion.

The ADC one is exactly the same -- Camera Source is just the manufacturer and you can buy directly from them.

DO IT!!

I replaced mine a few years ago with this one and it is GREAT.  Way better than the stock one.  I also left the small wire where I can reach it but didn't snip it so now I get the "factory" type yellow lines that turn when I move the wheel but also get stationary green-yellow-red lines in the display at the same time.

This may help. It's in the instructions.

I'm done himming and hawing. I ordered mine from Camera Source this morning. I have been underwhelmed by the quality of the OEM camera and really hope that this new camera will be a big improvement. I have experienced quite often, the quality of the OEM camera is so bad to the point of being unusable. My daughter has a backup camera on her 2014 Honda Pilot that gives much better images than mine. Hopefully this aftermarket camera will be on par as hers or maybe even better...

Can you please circle back with your thoughts? I'm on the fence too with replacing my factory camera. The day time image isn't too bad, but night time is pretty much unusable so I'm most curious what you think of using it in the dark. Thanks!

Yes, I promise to update. I just got an unexpected bonus! Turns out that Camera Source is somewhat local and about 60 miles NW of me in Johnson Creek, WI. I already got shipping notification so it should be here in no time. Great! Now hopefully I will have some decent weather as I will be doing this in my driveway.

Wow! Glad I decided not to pay for expedited delivery, LOL! Should have it in my hands around 1:30 as long as mail is on time today. I might even have this installed by this afternoon as temps will be in mid 40's...

Camera got delivered earlier this afternoon but I had some errands to run and didn't get started til later. It's installed now and I have to say it's a big improvement. I will still have to see how it does at night, in the rain, and when sun is shining behind the truck. Here are some before and after photos. The phone camera doesn't completely show what I see on screen but I can say that the video seem much crisper.

Some things I discovered while doing this. The camera wasn't too hard to get to. I removed the bed liner cover on tailgate and the metal cover over the latching mechanism to get to camera. The left torx camera screw was simple but getting the right one was a little more difficult because of limited space. I had a magnet that I used to grab it after it was loose. Camera just popped out after both screws removed.  A flashlight helps to locate those screws. There is a mounted clip for wiring for latch connector to hold that wiring in but I wasnt able to release it. I just removed the clip and then I used a ziptie around new harness into that hole and it should work just fine. As far as removing that 2 wired latch connector, there is a gray locking tab on top and it needs to slide out to release the connector

I didn't need to drop the spare to get to the connector under the bed. I had a head mounted flashlight that worked well to locate it. But removing the old camera connector sucked. There is one of those red locking tabs that needs to be pulled down. It didn't want to budge. I ended up using a pair of needle nosed pliers which broke it into pieces eventually. Luckily it doesn't matter because it is on the camera side of harness and won't get reused. It took a while but I was finally able to get the rest of that red tab to slide down enough to press on release and remove that connector. There are 2 wiring harness holders prior to wiring harness going into the tailgate and those both popped open pretty easily. Once the harness was loose under the bed, I tied on a long loose piece of wiring I had to the connector and then pulled old harness all the way through into tailgate by grabbing old camera. Once I got old camera and harness pulled through, I tied that loose wire onto connector of new harness and began pulling that into tailgate and back to under the bed. Then came installing the new camera. Again, not much room to work in there and my hands are a bit large. It took a bit of wrangling to get new camera in place and then I used a pair of heavy pliers resting on top of back of camera to hold it in place. The wiring to the camera wants to fight you and that didn't help. Once I finally got it in place and kind of held down, I made sure the locator pins were in proper place and then carefully installed the left torx screw and made sure not to drop it. The right screw was more difficult and I ended up dropping it into the tailgate! Luckily after searching for several minutes, I found it and was able to get it with my magnet. This time, I placed magnet close to the torx bit and then put the screw into the bit and it held. I slowly lowered it into place and was able to fully tighten it. I would highly suggest using a magnetic bit if you have one for this. Once camera was installed and latch wiring connector snapped into place, I began pulling on other end of that loose wire I was using to pull new harness through and out bottom of tailgate and under the bed. I pulled on it until I was able to get camera connector plugged in and then popped the hanging wiring back into this 2 holders. I closed the tailgate and tested camera and it worked. I also tested the lock button to make sure that the tailgate locked and unlocked. I was then able to reinstall the metal plate and bed liner tailgate cover.

So far I am impressed with the picture quality but need to see how it does in varying conditions.

    • My 2015 1500 LTZ Silverado suddenly won't go into 4 x 4 low. It will go into 4 x 4 high.
    • Yep, just a quick reference point.    My main point being I’d do a thousand other things before I’d pay 10k for a transmission.    Speaking in ignorance cause I don’t look at these trucks, what is it worth? 20k?
    • I think users are going to want to pick their monitored parameters, which parameters they want to see first.    It should probably start with baseline at a minimum and adjust to learned, but be able to overlay baseline for comparison.   A simple severity level would be able to determine what type of alerting is appropriate or user selectable.    Why not use the OBD port though?   I think a phone connection would be a good idea, push notifications type deal.   Number 1 issue is having data is useless if you don’t know what the data should be under normal conditions.
    • I thought I would use your thread and add to it as I just did my first longer drive with my truck in the last couple of days. I drove from the Grande Prairie area of Alberta down to Edmonton and most of where I drove in the city was the ring road so fairly free flowing but a bit of stop and go as well in the city. Stayed the night and returned home and not too many stops along the way each way but every restart and certainly every cold start sets it back for fuel mileage. Why I say that is I see some people will cherry pick a fuel mileage leg after the vehicle had been warmed up driveline wise before hand and its a forgiving ( easy rolling drive leg for example ) and call that their fuel mileage which can give a false perception of reality. I was not heavily loaded at all but never the less the flip bak cover, rubber bed mat, various tools etc and extra jerry cans of fuel all way up to a few hundred pounds of dead weight so its not an empty truck. The cold inflation tire pressures are set more near the freezing point so once they are warmed up driving I was showing 45 front and over 40 rear and realize high inflation pressures would help a little in fuel mileage but certainly not the ride on our crap sections of highway. The weather was good so was not raining as that can really drag mileage down, in fact I had a bit of a tail wind on average driving home. Most people on here would never have driven on that freeway to visualize it but its got a fair bit of rolling type of landscape with numerous river valleys. For the most part I had it on cruise set to 62 although kicking it off if I caught it in time before it started down shifting and self braking going down the grades. Most of the more substantial grades its shifting into 7th I believe as 8th just doesn't have it. Total distance round trip was 643 miles and my overall average and I did refuel three times in all, figured out to 17.65 miles per US gallon. My best fuel mileage section refuel within all of this figured out to 18.46 and these are all hand calculated figures. I find if anything that the trucks computer can be over optimistic, sometimes its pretty close but other times its stretching it. On paper persay in theory the truck would have just about made it on fumes for that whole drive without refueling once.    Which made me think of the topic thread of the wonder if these trucks could do 20 mpg and that is a good question, certainly would have to be on an easy going flat highway, no head wind, the right temperature, not packing around a bunch of dead weight and puttering along even slower than I was I would suspect and going steady and not stopping to smell the flowers or take a piss !. It probably is possible but not without effort to attain that with the wind resistance and weight of these trucks. Of course on my drive most people are passing me if they have the power as per loaded highway tractors, never mind a lot of speedy vehicles but the speed limit is 68 and most are at or well over that.
    • Monday looks like a good day for the dealer to test an ac issue. Hopefully it all turns out good.
