I am liking 0w-40 more and more for this engine, the direct injection under light part throttle makes quite a bit of soot and a diesel rated oil keeps it all suspended. Plus the additional oil pressure seems to help with reactivating valves in the DFM system. I go with the oil life indicator and start looking to change around 10% oil life remaining.

I ask myself if people who insist on changing oil as little as possible are this way about their socks and underwear.

If you believe a computer, the OLM is trustworthy, just remember they all sell parts and remain in business due to new vehicle sales.

Any detergent oil will run clean IF it isn't left in so long the dispersants become saturated or overheated to destruction of the polymers. 

 

Red Line, in addition to the usual additive dispersants, is made with a healthy dose of POE as a base oil which adds more dispercency due to its polar nature. More layman, it will hold more 'junk' in suspension and as generation of 'junk' in an otherwise healthy motor is pretty linear....it last longer. So, if one uses the same OCI the result is naturally a cleaner motor. 

 

The problem most make is in their definition of an extended oil change interval. They judge "extended" by the market driven 3K value of a detergent mineral oil whose life is greatly over estimated. Even Kendal's 1930 2K claim was an exaggeration. 

 

Non-Detergent Mineral Oil is a 500-mile oil. 

Detergent Mineral Oil like Pennzoil Conventional is a 1K-1.5K mile oil and always has been. 

A Group II/III or Group II/IV Synthetic will double that. 2K-3K. That IS an extended oil change.

Group IV/V oils will double that again.  That IS also an extended oil change. 

Small capacity NA MPFI motors with generous sumps by add more yet.  Under 2-liter Honda with a 4-qt pan will go 7.5K

Start adding GDI and boost and it goes the other direction. 

Even these numbers are not laid is stone and why a few UOA's to FIND YOUR number is always wise.
