Single or dual axle? Does one just handle better than the other?

I'm looking at getting a 6x12 enclosed utility trailer for a hobby of mine. I will never even get close to the payload capacity of the single axle so in that respect I don't need the extra capacity that a dual would give me. But I am wondering if the a dual axle just pulls better, etc.

I guess I am looking for some pros and cons of each.

personally i like dual axles, mainly because i do load them to their limits. and they are less likely to start swaying all over the place or be affected by the wind. generally handle better then a single axle trailer. but if you don't have a real need for a dual then don't spend the money. just do the trailering speed limit and don't tow like an idiot and everything will work very well.

No doubt the dual axle trailers tow better and are less likely to sway, but there is nothing wrong with a single axle trailer. Just make sure you load it properly and get your weight up on the tounge...

Double axle trailers are a LOT Easier to back up, if that would be a big consideration for you.

Safety, stability and distribution of weight is not quite as critical, all pluses for two axles and not much more cost.

I pull dual and single, a 6x14 dual and a 5x8 single, neither are enclosed but just traded in an enclosed 5x10! The dual axle trailers are worry free, they can take a load and pretty much follow right behind your truck! The single axle trailers are good but you have to be soooo careful of how you load it, I have actually pulled over and rearranged my load, because it was swaying!!!!!!

Cool thx guys, I iwll probably go with a dual axle setup but the cost is pretty substantial for the trailer I am looking at.

It's an entirely different frame (bigger beams, etc.) dual axle setup comes with electric brakes so theres that cost now.

I'll have to start saving money. haha

Now, who the heck here follows the posted speed limits? If I followed them here, I'd get run over by 18 wheelers!

Seriously though, I'd go dual axle primarily for weight capacity. Another thing os that single axles I've pulled tend to be a bit "bouncier" over bumps and stuff. Whereas a dual axle will be more stable.

Go dual... I tow snowmobiles and there is a big difference between dual and single... The elec brakes are good if the trailer starts to sway in a big cross wind you can hit the brakes on the trailer without using the brakes in the truck.. This tends to help to straighten out the trailer... I am so glad my new enclosed snowmobile trialers has duals, wouldn't have it any other way now...
