I definitely agree with the approach of starting to shop for new tires well before getting to the wear limit. My experience has been that wet traction, snow traction, and off-pavement traction noticeably fall off in the last third of the tread depth if not before. 

 

I start about a year before I need them gathering information. I've found that when I find one I like....it disappears or triples in price. 

 

Pepper never sees snow. Rarely rain. NEVER off road. 

 

Dad showed me a something about 60 years ago. When you are driving in the rain look behind you. Can you see your tire print? Full void? All four? If not....slow down until you can. Many new tires won't pass that test at 80 mph in a hard rain but it never seems to stop to many from doing it anyway.  

 

Heck, I've seen people doing 80 bumper to bumper in a fog so thick you can't see the tail lights of the car ahead of you. See a major story on that silliness at least once a year on the National News. 50 car pill ups. Used to see it every year multiple times a season in Salt Lake City.

I agree 100% on the tire print if you dont really see them your starting to hydroplane, years ago driving on a 2 lane highway in the snow only the right lane was not really plowed left lane had some tire tracks not plowed maybe 6" we were going about 30mph line of vehicles in front here comes this guy in a small SUV in the left lane doing about 45mph and about 3 miles up the road there he is standing outside his little SUV in the snowy median strip stuck I just tapped my horn as I drove by.

The thing is some people with 4WD think just because they can blaze through the wintry stuff without getting stuck, many fail to realize everyone has 4 wheel brakes so they can't stop any better than the next guy, actually maybe even less due to speed and momentum.

I totally agree. From what I've seen in many years in N WI and N MN, 4WDs just end up further in the ditch.

We work on pipelines mostly. My father hated 4WDS. I only had two. My brother only drives 4WD. My father had one for two weeks. It became my second one. They didn’t ride as good. We drove a lot. He said I have a tractor on the job I don’t need a 4WD. We only used 4WD to get out. Because you do take more chances if you have it.
