Quick question, and not sure if this is even the right sub section for it? But wanting to grab a scan-tool. Don’t need the most “pro-level” tool, but enough to read codes and get into the oem side menu to view various modules for codes. Also bonus points if it works on a Toyota car also (I have a chr I use as a work ride to save on gas and wear on the truck) 

 

now I know it’s the new global b system on my new truck. So is there suggestions of a reasonable one? Doesn’t need to have a Bluetooth dongle either. There’s like 10 different ones and I have no clue to what’s a good one or a waste.

I have been considering a scan tool for my ‘23 6.6L gas with 6 speed and Toyota vehicles.  I believe bi directional scan tools are preferred to allow for more than just pulling codes.

 

The Car Care Nut over on YT has pretty good things to say about one that he reviews on his channel.  He discussed its uses on Toyotas, but it works on most vehicles. Vid is 3 years old and no updates on the tool.

Not sure if this even fits what you’re looking for but, I running the Scan Gauge III.

It will give you codes and the ability to clear same but its basic ability is to provide real time engine operation parameters. Maybe not what you are seeking. It’s hardwired and so far, has worked very well on my 2024.

Make sure what ever you're looking @ works on the current GM vehicles. I bought a Creader Launch Elite G. It only partially worked w/ my 2024. i bought the adapter that supposedly would correct this, it didn't.

 

I wanted to be able to adjust the TPMS thresholds, but am unable to w/ this tool. Apparently there are scan tools that do permit this.

 

I guess I can use it for any code reading...

Do you have anything newer than the 2022? According to others on here, GM changed the 'architecture' w/ the '23s or '24s. What worked on previous model years may not be compatible.

I have been using a BlueDriver for several years.  It is very small which makes it convenient to keep in my center console, and move it from vehicle to vehicle for trips.  It interfaces with your smartphone via Bluetooth.  I have been getting a nuisance code on my 2013 C3500 for years, and while driving, I am able to plug in the BlueDriver, open the app on my phone, clear the code, unplug the BlueDriver, and toss it back in the center console.  I had a turbo code on my 2005 K3500 and went into limp mode while towing a trailer on a narrow canyon road.  I almost came to a stop with traffic behind me.  I was able to quickly plug the BlueDriver in, clear the code, exit limp mode, and resume my drive.  There was nothing wrong with the turbo, and it never came up again.  https://a.co/d/4IiAABx

I purchased the Autel TPMS Programming Tool TS508WF 2024 Version after reading advice on this forum.  I used it to reprogram my 2024 2500HD tire pressure threshold down to 50 psi because that is what I run my tires at, and the low tire pressure warnings were a pain every time I started the truck.  It worked great, and I have also been able to use it to relearn the tire locations after a rotation.  A little pricey, but the cheapest way to reprogram short of having a friend do it.

I ordered the TS501. Not really sure what the difference is, but is priced cheaper than the TS508

I had bought my TS508WF from Napa and I got a little off of it so it was 325.00, then early this month Princess puts it on sale for 280.00 and actually that sale ends tomorrow as per April 20th. However with Princess you can either possibly get a raincheck if they don't have one in stock or if you have that sale catalogue you can typically walk in after the sale and point to the price in your catalogue and they will sell it for that price. The regular price at Princess is 400.00 so that was a crap price.

 

Good question about the 501 vs the 508, I am guessing that the 508WF would be the wifi difference but a regular 508 I have no idea.

I've never thought of looking for scan tools @ PA before. If I'm in Oshawa, I usually make a stop @ the 1 next door in Whitby.

You certainly didn't miss out on anything with their regular price, just a fluke they happened to have a sale on them just to piss me off LOL. Certainly not worth 20.00 for a special trip and find they don't have any as their tracking of what the store website says they have and what they actually have are pretty sad at times and part of that is there system and part of it is certain items that walk out under someone elses power.

 

Some of what Princess will have in the way of scan tools are there because they are out of date and on their way out, not made anymore etc and probably got a smoking deal on them to flog off. The 508 isn't there yet in that category though.

      I was in Utah this week attempting a bow hunt in the Wasatch mountains with friends.  On the evening of the first hunt, making my way across a ridge to a friends camp, the upper control arm on the driver's side separated, the CV axle got trashed, and the wheel was dang near at a 45 degree angle to the ground.  I was able to get it towed off the mountain and into town about 3:00 am, and spent the remainder of the night in an O'Reilly's parking lot.  Luckily, there was a Chevrolet dealership not to far away so I was able to get to the dealership and pick up a new CV and UCA.  It would have been a few days before they could have gotten to the truck and I brought tools with me on hunt since it was a two day drive to get there, so I did the repairs myself in the O'Reilly's parking lot.      What's interesting is that the UCA ball joint didn't break, it just popped out of the bottom of the UCA.  There was VERY LITTLE evidence of grease on the ball joint or in the socket, and you could see where the ball joint had warbled out part of the socket over time.  I guess that's what happens over 186K miles of use :)   Big Kudos to O'Reilly's for letting me work on the truck in their parking lot.  However, they made a $150+ off of me from the purchase of various tools, so I guess it was in their best interest anyways :)   Getting towed off the mountain.   UCA Ball Joint Socket   Trashed CV   Suspension disconnected and UCA and CV Removed   New UCA and CV installed with the suspension buttoned up.

      My family still laughs at me when they see me drive up in the minivan. Same with less than a V-8 truck. It helps that I have choices. I don’t think I could only have a minivan as the one and only vehicle as much as I like it. And I wouldn’t pass up a good buy on an older V-8 reg cab GM truck. Could you live Raven as the only ride?
