Just did the Yukon 8 speed. Wish I had a better pump to empty the pan and replace fluid, it would have been less messy and hand pumping 7 or 8 quarts wasn't fun. I was able to drop the pan without loosening the exhaust, like on youtube, a pry bar to push it down helps. I replaced the filter because its a no brainer if you've got the pan down. I was in there replacing the transmission temperature sensor/harness.

I also added a thermostat eliminator.

@109k .....you would have had to change fluid, do a pill flip or other thermostat delete back at 30k & 60k & 90k to help the transmission to live longer. IMO.

Yes all that was done thermostat delete 30k but full fluid change at 15k and a pan drop filter change at 50k.  Transmission went at 82k.

Boy, sounds like you did what was right. Did you do the pill flip/thermostat delete? & AFM delete?

Transmission filter is essentially a "coffee filter/strainer".......................imperetive...........NO.......................feel good about doing it....................priceless.

Every time I take my truck in for a transmission fluid replacement, they drop the pan and replace the filter.
Have I been doing it wrong?

I don't think so.  Most don't bother to mess with the transmission.  To me keeping fluids and filters fresh will only help prolong the life of the vehicle.

I have 4 vehicles passing 160K. All have transmission fluid drop and fills regularly. Usually if the filter shows debris it’s game over. I don’t open the transmission. Some say if the fluid is completely drained and filled on high mileage vehicles. The debris removal will lead to the transmission slipping and failure. Some say whatever path you choose start early like filter changes or flushing. And do it often.
