NAV and 6 disk changer in a Silverado

Recommended Posts

Just got my 6-disc changer in the mail from JPCustoms.  I looked on ebay but most of either too used or too close in price to the JPCustoms unit to forego the warranty.

I want to do the wiring ASAP and test the unit...but won't be able to mount it for a little while.  Obviously there's no danger in just doing the wiring...but will hooking the unit up to test it and then running without it cause the anti-theft crap or programming to get upset?

Also...JPCustoms' directions are running wire 8 to the HVAC unit in the name of "instrument panel lamps".  Is this necessary?  The diagram in this thread shows wire 8 (gray) going nowhere...are you all running your cd players dark or is this just not required?

Thanks!

You don't need that wire, (tape it off) the button lights are controlled by the changer itself and the data bus wire.

Yes, you can do the wiring and test it. there is no reprogramming involved for the cd changer and there is no theftlock problems either.

Is the lux amp that much better than the regular amp?

I'm thinking one could add an aftermarket amp for the same price with better results?

Yes the lux amp is much better than the base amp, but allmost any aftermarket amp could be made to sound even better if you know want your doing.

Hello All,

I just joined the site - great to find this place! It is amazing how much info you guys have provided in this post. It is very much appreciated. I was wondering if I can install nav in my 2001 burb? I am trained in electronics, and based on all I've read in this post, the only possible showstopper I see would be if the 03's and up have a newer data bus that the HU requires. I am already aware of the changes in the dash panels and trim, and console starting in 03. Just hoping you don't say "no way"...

Oh yeah, and the only thing I couldn't figure out is what you mean by INR and TNR, and what the difference is.

Thanks!

Sorry for the bad news, but

No, the nav unit will not work in your 01, you must have the data bus for it to function.

The INR is the intergrated navigation radio (non-touchscreen) and

the TNR is the touchscreen navigation radio

Is it the 03's and up that have that data bus? Does the unit need this just for the VIN/Theftlock? If that's all it is, it could be simulated if a person had the bus spec.

Could somebody describe to me how it is better?

i.e. better mids, better highs, louder, more bass, clearer, etc.? all of the above? better imaging?

Thanks. I really like the idea of a factory setup, as it's clean and simple.

One more question for anyone...the wiring diagrams earlier in this thread show that I'll need to add 3 wires to one of the connectors on the head unit (and tap into three wires on the other). All I have on the "radio end" of the CD-changer harness are raw wires. Am I going to have to get some of those "Metri-Pack" terminals to connect to this?

My truck came with the Six-disc changer HU, XM, and Onstar. The HU was replaced with a TNR (non-lux).

Yes, the data bus is in the 03-05's.

The data bus can not be simulated and it does alot more than theftlock, It actually turns the unit on and off (since there is no switched power feed) it communicates with the BCM for alot of the functions like chimes, presents, memory, speed and noise compensated volume, the steering wheel controls and CD changer functions have to go through the BCM and the data bus. the lighting and dimming are also controlled through it.

The three wires that go to the 24 pin connector (power, ground, and Data Bus) can just be spliced into the wires at the connector with wire taps or soldering, the other three (left audio, right audio, and commom) that go to the 12 pin connector will need the terminals crimped onto the wire and than pushed into the connector.

Ok, well I start the install monday and I have a couple of quick questions. I have the 10377287 NON-LUX TNR.

1.) For the VSS wire, I go from A4 on the cluster to B4 on the large "c1" radio connection?

2.) After looking at the picture of the mouting location for the gps antenna it looks like you have to take the dash off, is this true? If so how do you take it off?

Thanks guys

The lux amp has finer contol over the audio adjustment, it does has more power but not that much. The Lux amp also has a DSP built in for different soundfield settings and it has a noise compensated auto volume.

Yes you can use an aftermarket amp and get alot more power but you will lose the DSP and noise compensated volume.

So what does my 01' have? I assume it has a databus too, just a different one. I've been searching on the web and it looks like the bus for the 03-05's is the "Class 2". Is that correct? Does that mean mine is a "Class 1"? Also, I read some stuff that looks like some GM cars are already using a newer GMLAN databus system, that will supposedly be in all GM cars soon. I engineer and design CAN and CCD busses for John Deere, and I still think this could be done, with a message "translator" device that I could build. I use every kind of bus "spy" and interfacing tool imaginable in my work, and I have a buddy with an 04 burb. Hmm, very interesting.....

The VSS wire goes to the "E" position on the small (12 pin connector) on the nav radio not the B4 on the 24 pin connector. It does come from A4 at the gauge cluster and it is dark green with white tracer.

I didn't have to remove the dash pad, my hand fit in the area behind the headunit when it was removed and I just used a plastic push in retainer to secure the antenna on the dash brace.

Yes, I believe you have the class I data bus, the 03-05's have the class II.

I'm sure there may be a way to translate, but that is a little over my head.

gltech--- As BB said, the 03-05 GM trucks and SUV's use the Class II data bus system. In 06 they are switching to the new "GMLAN" and i beleive it is a variation of the CAN-BUS. But... on the 00-02 trucks, I dont even know if there was (is) a data bus system. I know for a fact the GMT-560 medium duty trucks did NOT have the Class II data bus in 2002 and before...but they got it in 2003. Whether this is the same case for the light duty trucks/SUV's, im not sure, but im inclined to say no [they didnt have a data bus]. The few modules in the 00-02 trucks that DID need to communicate in some electronic form (such as the PCM and BCM) probably just used some proprietory language. AN example that leads me to beleive this is that in the 02's and before, things such as memory settings did not control various other aspects of the whole car. When you get in an 03 and press "driver 1", the seat adjusts, the radio changes to what YOU were listening to last, it changes to your radio DSP settings, changes to the climate control settings you last used etc... There are good and bad things about having the data bus system. Mainly good such as less wiring, better wiring integrity, memory control functionality, etc...the bad part is that every single component of the vehicle becomes dependant on eachother. Adding aftermarket audio/video stuff nessescitates the use of various adapters, computers, and other things to maintain the data bus integrity and keep it from freaking out. Thats why putting a new nav into a vehicle without this data bus is pretty much impossible, even for someone who is very very qualified in this field, such as yourself. Off the top of my head these are things i can think of that the NAV head unit relies on the Class II data bus for: door chimes...theftlock...gps data...steering wheel controls...complete cd changer control...complete OnStar system control...complete XM control...VSS data...RSA control and audio signals...and most importantly, it controls the whole AMP (DSP, fade, balance, volume etc) thru the data bus. Basically everything in that box requires Class II as "life support". Then you have the amp to deal with :) !!! It needs the data bus just as much as the head unit does. The data bus, the NAV, and the Bose amp are like a little tripod...take out one thing and it all stops working :D ! And the head unit also regularly communicates with the BCM for various info (like which splash screen to show on start up). Remember, I AM NOT trying to tell you to give up!!!!!! With your expertise in this area, im sure anything is possible...just in this case there is stiff "competition"

If you feel up to it, go for it!! keep us updated on the way!!! Hoep that helps you out a bit..

Ben,

Thanks for the info! :) Here's what I'm thinking at this point. I want the amp and CD changer anyway, so they will be compatible with each other. I also don't have any steering wheel controls, so that's off the list. That leaves the chimes, theftlock, gps (??? - I thought the GPS antenna plugged into the HU) and OnStar. I'm going to hook my equipment up to my buddy's 04' burb. I'll be able to "record" all the message traffic going in and out of his HU. Then I'll know what I'm dealing with. If there is not an overwhelming number of HU messages, I should be able to build a small microprocessor based unit that the HU will 'see' as the newer data bus. I should also be able to take things like the chimes, for instance, and hook them up to the mp unit and have the mp unit interface with the HU on their behalf. In other words, the mp unit would act as a 'proxy' for that stuff. I don't know what VSS and RSA are, but my spying on the 04' unit should give me everything the HU knows, expects and understands.

You probably all think I'm nuts, but the only reason I'm even considering this is that I want nav real bad (I have another car with it), and I'm one of these 'factory-only' obsessors. :D

Hey, and what is this "Warn (0%)" thing on the left on my posts?

Anyway, thanks again!
