NAV and 6 disk changer in a Silverado

One other issue you're going to encounter is the physical size of the unit. 03+ Radios are 2-DIN, 99-02s are 1.5-DIN. (DIN being a measure of height relative to a "standard size" aftermarket type head unit. I'm guessing the big challenge will be creating/modifying a dash bezel with a bigger hole that still appears factory.

Would be very cool if you managed to hack the serial bus. I believe it can be done, given that companies such as PAC and Soundgate have managed to do it to integrate the IPOD and aftermarket Sirius/XM interfaces with factory HUs.

And for the record:

VSS=Vehicle Speed Sensor (single wire from instrument cluster)

RSA=Rear Seat Audio

RSE=Rear Seat Entertainment (flip down DVD)

Good luck to ya!

Ben,

Thanks for the info! :) Here's what I'm thinking at this point. I want the amp and CD changer anyway, so they will be compatible with each other. I also don't have any steering wheel controls, so that's off the list. That leaves the chimes, theftlock, gps (??? - I thought the GPS antenna plugged into the HU) and OnStar. I'm going to hook my equipment up to my buddy's 04' burb. I'll be able to "record" all the message traffic going in and out of his HU. Then I'll know what I'm dealing with. If there is not an overwhelming number of HU messages, I should be able to build a small microprocessor based unit that the HU will 'see' as the newer data bus. I should also be able to take things like the chimes, for instance, and hook them up to the mp unit and have the mp unit interface with the HU on their behalf. In other words, the mp unit would act as a 'proxy' for that stuff. I don't know what VSS and RSA are, but my spying on the 04' unit should give me everything the HU knows, expects and understands.

You probably all think I'm nuts, but the only reason I'm even considering this is that I want nav real bad (I have another car with it), and I'm one of these 'factory-only' obsessors.  :D

Hey, and what is this "Warn (0%)" thing on the left on my posts?

Anyway, thanks again!

That initial VSS info was a GM misprint. Likely carried out in a few reply's. As stated, "E" of C2 is the correct HU connection.

I found this:

J P Customs:

"Upgrade your factory audio system (Bose & Non-Bose) to Touchscreen Navigation and keep your factory XM, DVD, Rear Audio Controls, OnStar, steering wheel controls (and Remote CD Changer; Denali & Escalade only). This upgrade package is a COMPLETE package with everything needed for the upgrade."

It must be as I suspected, I has heard of this but the HU's part # always came back as in a vehicle with the Bose equip, so I just blew it off (Non-Bose uses internal amps in the HU for UQ3 & UQ5 speaker systems).

However they installed it in a "NON-Bose" system and it worked..

Well, now this is from a trusted source, this kit will work!

sperry, I think the JP Customs package deal is a Bose HU and they include the bose amp and a new wiring harness, that is why they say Bose or Non-Bose.

Some one please help. I have a 03 Hummer H2 with the Y91 sound. Am trying to upgrade the radio to the non-touch screen nav. The systems seems to be working fine, but no sound. I tried to to change the amp with another but still no luck. Can anyone help?

Thanks

Our Non-Bose package does not include the Bose amp. You'll keep your Non-Bose audio system, we're just upgrading you to Touch Screen Navigation.

Thanks for clearing that up. So you have a TNR that will work in a non-Bose vehicle now?

I have a INR Non-Bose in my truck now and would like the TNR, what is the part number and how much is just the HU?

You must have the wrong headunit (non-lux vs. lux). What is the part no. of the nav unit? what Bose amp do you have: long skinny one with fins on one end or the shorter rectagular one. The Y91 doesn't always mean you have the lux amp.

Domcardenas,

Sounds like a definate AMP issue to me. Is this AMP the one that came stock in your H2? Or is it one that you bought?

Yep, you have a lux Nav unit and a non-lux amp. You will have to swap one or the other so they match. Changing the amp will require some simple wiring changes or changing the headunit will be plug and play if its not theftlocked.

I bought the amp from linda or someone from this forum on ebay. The amp is the same as the stock. Same part number and all. I called GM the said that the HU will not work in the 03 that it's a plug n play for the 04 and 05. We got the theftlock off. but no sound.

you didnt buy a 5199992 from me, and before mine go out.....they are thoroughly tested. I deal almost exclusively with "884" LUX AMPs, they seem to be more reliable. Anyhow, i would bet my 52' yacht that its an AMP issue for sure now. Seeing as it was an aftermarket purchase. Find one thats was pulled from a working vehicle and i would bet you will be fine.

P.S. I do not have a 52' yacht.

Finally all done!

Thanks again for all the help everyone! I took your advice Linda and shaved the pocket to 3/16" and it fits just about perfect. I still need to take off a tiny bit more of the pocket though, as the little tabs on the lower left corner of the bezel are not fully engaging (not really visible in the pic). I'm going to do the rest with a file/sandpaper...I think your recommendation of 3/16" was the right distance to make the cut though. I had to remove the little box on the back of the changer that houses the connector (the connector now hangs freely), but I did not remove/bend down the tabs that hold it in place.

Not sure if this was mentioned before, but I figured I'd pass on this technique that worked really well for cutting the bezel. I first hacked off everything but an inch of it with a it with a sabresaw. I then used two c-clamps to hold a metal straight edge to it to guide the cut, and then made the cut as recommended with a utility knife. I was able to do this on all fours sides and got a really clean cut out of the deal.

I am wondering if someone can proivde me with the part numbers I need to install a 2005 touchscreen Nav unit in a 2004 Envoy SLT.

- I have the Bose system and the 6-disc in dash changer however the only EQ modes available are "CUSTOM" and "TALK" which leads me to beleive I have a non-lux amp (can anyone confirm this).

- I DO NOT have the Y91 code on the label inside my glovebox.

Can anyone point me in the direction of a tutorial (hopefully with pics) on installing this nav unit in an Envoy? Thanks in advance.
