I am shocked ...

I've been fighting a BAD vibration from 45-55

Changed wheels, tires ... rotated the driveshaft 180* ... had the new wheels/tire back to the same shop 3 times for balance ...

I finally decided it HAd to be a driveline imbalance.

So, I took the ole truck to my local GM dealership and proclaimed I had GMPP extended warranty.

They performed a series of driveline tests (they say) and proclaimed the driveline was A-OK.

They then removed the wheels and tires and rebalanced them. NO help.

They took the wheels and tires off of a demo unit and installed them on my truck.

NO VIBRATION!

So, it HAS to be wheels and tires. So back to the tire dealer it goes ...

At the dealership, when I asked for what I owed ... nothing ... nada .... nyet ...

I'm still in shock. I didn't buy the truck there ... never spent a nickel there ...

Sweet ...

Now, we'll see what Goodyear does ...

My shake developed a couple of months after I got in the truck ....

Quite often a shake like this can be cured by breaking the seal on the tire machine, then rotating the tire on the rim 180 Deg, then reseat and balance. That has cured many shake problems I have had with big tires.

The tire/wheel assembly may be balanced but it could still have excessive runout in one or more axes that could cause a vibration, typically in the tires but could be a bad wheel or two as well.

Take any vibrating vehicle to a dealership or service facility that has a "Road Force Balancer" such as the Hunter 9700. When you balance the wheel assembly first you eliminate the wheel and tire as your source of vibration or not. A normal balancer would eventually balance out a square tire or close to it any way. The road force balancer not only measures rim run out in the thousandths but applies approx. 700lbs of force to the tire. This measures the tire sort of how it meets the road. Every tire has a low and high spot. The wheel has the same. When the tire and wheel has too much run out the computer will tell you if breaking the tire down and moving it on the rim will improve the ride quality. Then the computer will tell you where to mark the wheel and tire to move it. It will also tell you if it won't help. There is an extra attachment that will tell you if the tread walks side to side. A regular balancer can not do that.

My dealership has one and it is amazing as to how it helps with vibrations. Our GM Accessories division has sold over 250 sets of the new GM 20 inch wheels and tires and we have only found 2 wheels out of spec but more tires than I care to think about. And we have yet to have one come back for a vibration.

Ask them for a copy of the computer print out if the tires are out of spec. We have a dealership from 50 miles away that brings potential vibration problems to us for a print out. I have yet to hear of anyone that had a problem at the tire dealer when they show them the computer print out. All of the tire manufacturers accept this testing as state of the art.

It keeps you from pulling out a lot of hair too.:crackup:
