HVAC Problem

Recommended Posts

Hi Everybody,

I have a 2000 GMC Savana 2500 and something is wrong w/ the HVAC system. When I turn it on (any position from lo to max) the compressor, blower motor, etc. works but there is no air coming from the vents. I can feel a small amount of air flow coming from the defrost side vents and windshield defroster vents (which isn't normal since I didn't even pick the defrost mode). Anyone know what might cause this? There isn't a cabin filter for this make and model so I know thats not the problem.

Thanks,

Luke

[Just to kill the obvious early, you've got the vents open via the switches under them correct? ]

99silveradoz71, I'm not quite sure I understand (sorry A/C and heat not my specialty). I just turned it on via the switches normally.

99silveradoz71 is talking about the actual vents on the dashboard. Each one should have a switch of some sort underneath that enables you to turn that individual vent on or off. He just wanted to make sure that you have them all open. Assuming that they are, I'd say there is some sort of problem with the diversion door actuators inside the dashboard. There are 2 or 3 doors/flaps inside the HVAC system in the dash that open and close to divert air to where you select with the selector on the dash. When you choose to have the air come from the dash, or the defrosters up top, or out on the floor by your feet, these doors move to divert the air to those areas. There are electric actuators (servos) on each one to facilitate movement. If one of the flaps gets stuck/jammed or if the actuator fails, the air won't move. Each door, I think, is spring-loaded to the closed position, so if the actuator fails, it will close. I'm not sure how to fix this, but maybe one of the experts here can answer. I belive it requires removing the A/C unit from the dashboard which is pretty involved. Good luck!
