Black "rubber" like coating on frame

Recommended Posts

The Silverado comes with this rubber like coating on the frame.  I imagine it is to rust protect it, but what's the point if it just flakes up and falls off after a year?  Has anyone else noticed this?  I'm going to check with chevy this week hopefully.

ITS A WAX

anyone try that rubber undercoating in a can?  3m makes one

Ryan you are right it is a wax.  I've used the rubberized undercoating that comes in a spray can before with good success.  I'm thinking of spraying my rear wheel wells with it to cover up and protect the paint... (it's strange not to have a liner in the rear wheel wells).

shaners

great minds think alike i guess i was thinking of doing the same.  Maybe even dampen the sound of rocks hitting inside there

ive used the rubberized undercoating after i put on my lift lips it looks pretty good,i also sprayed flat black paint on after that since the stuff i got was like a brown color after i sprayed it.i know there a few different makers of the undercoating.

purpose of the wax is for rust protection that is why underbody rust proofing voids your warranty on your truck.

Hey all,

A couple of comments;  that wax like substance is there to protect the frame against rust.  So, if any of you change out your fuel filter, make sure you re-treat the area because gas will EAT that wax off and the frame rail will rust (it is near impossible to NOT get gas on the frame rail when changing the fuel filter).  What I use is Boeshield T-9, comes in a can and will leave a near wax like residue for protection.

Also, those of you considering using the undercoating in a can for the wheel wells.  A word of caution; if you travel any dirt roads that have a mixture of clay or brine that stuff is a b#tch to get out of those little pockets that form from spraying on the undercoating.  Although it will come of with a scrub brush, I personally don't like that "textured" look and is harder to clean than a high temp or equiv. paint.  Others I know like the undercoating, but over time I think it acts as a dirt magnet.

My thoughts,

Hey! I beat Shaners to something!  I sprayed the inside of the rear wheel wells with the textured rubber paint (at MountaineerTom's suggestion).  It came out nice and fixes that funky look that the white paint gave the wheel wells.  Why would they do that? Not put in a liner??? I think it looks much better this way.  I havent noticed a difference in noise though....

That stuff is useless. It is comming off the frame of my truck already. Every time they put it on the lift it comes off.

I've used spray on undercoat to touch up where the wax coating has been chipped off, and had no problems, as well as to black out the rear inner wells.

Yea, it kinda browns out, just like the front liners, but I've found that pressure washing it and spraying it with No-Touch makes it look like new.
