Z71 vs "4x4" ???

How much different is the ride? I am thinking of buying

the 1500 crew cab and when configure the one I want the

z71 comes up cheaper with the options I want than does

the "4x4" One of the reasons I want to trade my 2500 is

I have a bad back and want a better ride. Will the Z71

be any better than my 2500-"Not a HD"

I think the Z71 has a bit stiffer shock...but there really is not much difference. My truck (sig) is the 4x4 model and it rides very well. You can get the adjustable ride option, that way you can change it based on if you tow or whatnot....just a thought. The Z71 is basically just a sticker, a little different shock, skid plates, and something different with the bumpers...but I got the plates on mine from the factory (I ordered the truck as I wanted it) for 95 bucks....and the locking diff...do not forget that. Hope this helps...I think you will notice a big difference from 2500 to 1500 no matter which you choose... :D:thumbs:

the z71 in 2005 also comes with a manual t-case.. so you dont get auto-4x4 as an option. im a fan of manual t-cases, but when i took it for a test drive i didnt like how it went into 4low... too much noise for me.

i got my 1500CC "4X4" with the skid plates and rear locking diff w/4.10 gears from the factory.

you'd love this truck.. because it rides waaay too smooth for me

Isn't the "manual" transfer cases still electronically controlled? My understanding has been that it's just a lever instead of a button. Am I wrong?

I have both and the 1500 Z71 rides way smoother than the HD period. My 2003 Z71 does go into 4 low with a good audible noise but apparently it's normal.

Do not think so...you really have to throw the lever sometimes with the manuals and if you are to slow you get grinding...it I think is mated directly to the case...the cases are different too. (Manual Tcases do not have Autotrac). Anyone know any better?

Are you sure about this? If I'm reading what you posted right it sounds like you can't get the auto 4x4 with the z71 option now. If that's what you meant I know for sure you're wrong because there are several '05 Z-71's sitting on the local Chevrolet lot that have the auto-4x4. (I'm not even sure they have 1 with the manual t-case right now, lol.)

Most will have auto...I think it depends on what seats you get and trim packages...I think. The LS trucks have the manual...the LT have the Autotrac...the Z71 with certain trim has either...just depends on how it is ordered...am I right? :smash::thumbs:

I've got an '02 Z71, LS trim and I've got the pushbutton 4WD.

All the Z71's i looked at had the manual t-case, however all = like 3 or 4.. im sure you can get the Z71 with the electric t-case (that has autotrac)

Differences: the manual t-case is direct linkage- that lever you pull shifts the gears in the t-case "manually".. and they lock into place.

An electric t-case has a shift motor that turns a pin to put it in and out of 4x4. The downfall of the electric t-case is that it uses magnetic clutches rather than gears for the front drive-shaft. (That's how autotrac works). So for actual off-road enthusiasts this sucks, because the clutch eventually starts to slip under harsh conditions.. (hence the reason i swapped a manual t-case into my explorer)

I however opted for the electric t-case in my silverado for 2 reasons... 1- the autotrac is a LIFESAVER in rainy weather with a pickup, especially if you're like me and not used to driving one :chevy: 2- i hated the so called "normal" noises that the manual t-case made when i attempted to put it into 4low.. it just rubbed me the wrong way. and since this vehicle is a tow rig- not my trail rig.. i can live without the manual t-case.

hope this clears up some confusion about them..
