Daytime Running Lights out

Recommended Posts

I just purchased a 99 silverado ext cab LS. The daytime running lights do not work. There is no light on the dash lite up either. Does this mean they are burned out and when i replace them the daytime running light symbol and the dash will appear? Does the truck have to be in gear for them to be on or do they come on when you start it. The headlights come on automatically when I start the vehicle when its dark.

Also, is there a bulb that will last longer than the standard GM part #?

The DRL's will come on when you put it in gear, and there's no indicator on the dash. Check em in gear, and if they're still out, I'd check the DRL fuse and the bulbs as a starting point.

As far as a bulb that lasts longer, I use Sylvania 3157/4157 NALL as per lyrmal's recommendation...he seems to have alot of knowledge in the headlight/drl area. The one's I use are amber, and the LL stands for long-life. They also make clear long lifes too.

What budhayes3 said!! The DRL's wil light up once you put the trick into gear and release the parking brake. There is no indicator lamp for them.

When I first bought my 99 Silverado, I had one DRL go out in the first month and the dealer replaced it. A couple of months later the same bulb went out. So I went back to the dealer and asked the service writer what the deal was with the DRL bulbs that don't seem to last. I had mentioned that I had seen a large number of trucks and SUV with one DRL out.

The guy replied that they hardly ever get trucks in that have the bulbs out and I must have just gotten a bad bulb. I replaced both GM bulbs with Sylvania LL amber bulbs and 5 years later, the same two amber bulbs are working just fine. And I still see lots of new trucks with one DRL bulb out. Go figure.

I'll agree with those above. I went to the amber Long Life's shortly after purchasing miine and almost 6yrs later they're still blazing away.

Why amber over the clear?

for the  factor. ive got them on my 03 SS and thay really look good. if you going

to replace burned out ones, try them and if you don`t like them you can always take them back and exchange them...

good luck.

I replaced both bulbs with the 3157LL. I went with clear because I am not big on amber anything. Evverything lights up nice now when I put the truck in gear.
