Rust starting on a 2004 Ext Cab!!!

WTF ………..rust starting and a year and half old truck!!!!

I have an ’04 Ext cab, went thru one winter. Got it May of '04.

When I was washing it, I noticed the paint bubbling on the inside bottom of two of the doors!!!

I ‘ve seen it on other vehicles before, I know when I break that layer of paint, there will be water and rust starting under there.

It’s bubbling up right along the seam where the outer door skin gets hemmed up in onto the inside .

Its starting on my passenger side door, maybe 3-4 spots/ bubbles along the seam and then on the drivers side rear door, and that’s like along most of the seam, creeping up to the weep/ drain holes on the bottom side of the door.

I was thinking about wire wheeling the paint off along the seam and then re-coating it with Rust-Oleum. Its on the inside of the door, so its not visible from the outside.

Any other suggestions?

Don't wire wheel it, or, you won't have any ability to make a claim with the dealership. I'd bring it to the attention of the service manager at the dealership where you purchsed it.

My wife's 02 Tahoe started rusting on the rear bumper after about 2 years, just to the right of the license plate, I've not worried about it, because it's not serious, but, you should talk with your dealership about this before you start carving it up, and voiding a warranty for rust-through coverage, or something they may be able to take care of.

WARRANTY!!!!!!!!!!!

I totally agree... don't fix it. Don't try to fix it. WARRANTY....

Same locations, same problem. The dealer sent it out to a local bodyshop to be repainted. Of course the guy at the shop said it'd come back due to the construction and it has. Not sure how I'll address it this time, but I'm probably on my own.

My wife's 02 Tahoe started rusting on the rear bumper after about 2 years, just to the right of the license plate, I've not worried about it, because it's not serious,

The dealer replaced the rear bumper on my '01 HD on the last day of it's warranty because it was starting to show some rust spots coming through the chrome.

Sucks don't it. If your still in your base warrenty GM might cover that, but other wise they don't fix it till theres a hole on the corrision warrenty. I had the inside bottom painted on my passenger side door painted this year. Just don't look at the hood latch or the brake lines now.

Ive lived in New England all my life and one big thing that helps alot is keeping the door jams clean, if you let that crap sit on there for months at a time it will cause some damage especially salt build up.I would go to your dealer and atleast have it noted on there system just incase it starts to do more then just be surface rust.

Thanks Guys!!! I'll make it over to my dealer in the next couple weeks and notify the service dept.

I'll be interesting to here what they tell me. I'll post back what i find out.

This should be a warranty issue. If it's not rust but just bubbling paint, it's still covered under the 36mo/36K mile bumper to bumper. My '02 Denali has bubbling paint along the inside bottom of the rear liftgate and the bottom of the drivers door with no rust. I'm not optimistic they'll do anything since it's out of warranty but this is clearly a problem with the paint application. Sounds like I might not be alone.

My truck had the same problem on the passenger door after only 2 years (one winter). My dealership said it wasn't considered a warranty claim until there was a hole. My argument was by the time there was actually a hole from rust the truck would be well outside the warranty period but their response was basically "You're SOL." I wound up hitting the bottom of the door with my small sandblaster and then using some type of special rust paint from The Eastwood Company. The paint wasn't an exact match but it was close and for the next 3 years it didn't appear to come back before I sold it.

Had the same problem on my wifes 02 Envoy on the back hatch, both rear door and my dealer fixed them no problem. Now Im the second owner and it had 48,000 mile on it but we bought the extended warrenty. So far it doing good this will be the first winter after the repair.
