Noise When Steering

Ok,

Not sure how common this is, but I would guess I'm not the only one who has this.

I have a 2001 Silverado 1500 and when I turn the steering wheel there is a whine/squeal that sounds like it's coming from right inside the steering wheel. Now, please don't confuse this with the kind of squeal that older vehicles get when the power steering pulley creates to much tension against the aux. belt. That noise comes from under the hood. The noise I have seems to come from something inside the cab.

Now, I know my steering needs some love anyhow. I've already ordered a new upper steering shaft and I'll probably be replacing the EVO sensor to see if I can tighten things up.

But, I'd like to get rid of the squealing noise too. It doesn't really seem to be hurting anything, but it is annoying. Kind of sounds like hard rubber rubbing against plastic if that makes any sense.

Maybe I'm just anal but it makes my truck seem older than she really is.

Thanks,

Lang

my 99' does it. I read some where to spay lube up into the boot under the dash but that did not really work. I hope someone has an answer.

yeah, I got the same deal. Just needs some lube somewhere. Can't remember, but I had the dealership fix it once right after I bought it. Thay said it would probably come back and to just bring it back when it does. I'll have to drive into the city and ask. Nothing to really worry about, but it is annoying.

Thanks guys. Yeah, I didn't figure it was any kind of mechanical problems. just one of those bugs all vehicles have in one way or another. It would definitely be nice to have a way to maintenance that wouldn't require pulling the wheel and messing with the air bag.

Mine does that also (04 Silverado 2wd Ext Cab). It seems to do it most noticably when outdoor temperatures/cabin is cold. I sure would like to know what to do to fix it.
