well after having my chevy for 3 years and been browsing this site for about 2 i have got a lot of help and have read a bunch of use full stuff. But i just went out and did the unthinkable. I got me a new cummins diesel 4x4. it was a hard choice between all the 3 diesels but i think i did alright. im getting 20.5 mpg on the highway compared to the 14.5 to 15 i was getting. i will still be swinging by and checking this place out but i guess im gonna have to be staioned at dodge truck world now. Thanks for all yalls help guys.

Good Luck with the Dodge. A friend of mine just bought a truck like you describe with a manual tranny. He claims the same milage as you state, but my uncle has one with almost 70k on the clock and the inside rattles and squeeks like crazy. He does not take very good care of it either, so I hope yours is better.

Best of luck with the Dodge!! :D

I'm not going to knock you too hard, at least you did not buy Toyota or Nissan..or worse a Honda Ridgeline :D

The Cummins is a real decent motor, it was designed as a diesel not a gas V-8 conversion to diesel..

Have fun with it.

I did the opposite and went from an 04.5 Ram 2500 Cummins 600 48RE to a 05 GMC Sierra 5.3 HO. I never got "great" or even "good" mileage and best recorded mileage was no better than what I'm getting in my Sierra city or highway. In a comparison, the Ram was my favorite by far but the Sierra is growing on me. With diesel prices substantially higher than gas in CA, I've had no regrets. I couldn't imagine paying $350/mo or another loan payment for fuel.

Just kidding. Enjoy the Cummins motor.

Given a choice out of the three, with the spotty reliablity of the Duramax (at least thats what I gather from others) and the very poor reliability of the Power joke, I myself would go with the Cummins as well.

Hope you enjoy it

Power Joke? That' a new one for me

I heard that the old 7.5 liter was a decent motor, but the new 6.0 liter has been troublesome from the beginning. IMHO, Cummins is the winner as far as reliability goes, but Dodge auto transmissions suck. I test drove both a manual and auto Cummins and the auto version shifted with a loud clunk, like a truck with 200K miles on it. Both were new trucks. I liked the manual version much better.

POWER JOKE????? your kidding right??? dont get me wrong i love my sierra but fords power stroke is no joke...but thats just my opinion

The 6.0 Powerstroke is such a train wreck that Ford is abandoning it only after 4 production years. They will have an all new 6.4 Twin Turbo diesel available in the '07 Superduty trucks.

Computer problems, head bolts failing and aweful milage, towing or empty have plagued that motor from the get go.

The 7.3 was the best diesel engine on the market, but it was too noisy for many of todays consumers and it could not pass new emission laws. Too bad.

I remember the last new crew cab F350 with the old Powerstroke on our local Ford dealer's lot. It was heavily discounted (factory rebates included), and I was surely tempted to get it. All 6.0 liter Power Stroke trucks were selling at sticker (and no Ford rebate either) and all salesmen were bragging about that new 6.0 engine, as if it was the best engine ever made. I think the person who bought the left over truck is probably very happy today, and those who bought the first year 6.0 regretted the day they bought it (at retail prices!).

Good luck with the Dodge.

I wish GM had the Cummins mated to the Allison tranny. That would be awesome.

Yeah, twin turbocharged 855 cu in, 500 HP 6 cylinder in-line Cummins 250 in a new 2 ton Silverado 450 dually, mated to a commercial truck heavy duty 6 speed Allison. They would wipe out the competition instantly.

The only problem is that this engine weighs about 2400 lbs. And that's without the transmission. And fuel economy would be nothing to brag about. But the power and torque would be awesome!

With that kind of torque, it would be a stump puller. The problem with that is that all other trees near the stump would be pulled up as well.
