Alright guys, I am looking for a cheap boat with an inboard motor. Something around the 5Ks for just cruising around and some watersports. Anyone know where I can find something like this??

I have checked out boattraderonline.com but not really much help. Everything there is "call for price." I hate that.

Anyhow, let me know. Or if any of you guys are selling your boats put them up. Thanks, Christian

I know your in Tennessee but the following site has some boats

If there are any marinas in your area, it is worth driving through and having a look. There are always lots of boats sitting around the boatyard with for-sale signs on them.

You know the old saying the happiest days of a boat owner is the day they buy their boat and the day they sell it. :D

I can attest to that fact even though we have not sold ours yet. Ever since we bought it we have had nothing but a money pit. We thought we were getting a good deal since we knew the previous owner. Heck he even picked up the tab on one repair that the insurance didn't pick up due to his neglect. $1200 out of his pocket. That was really cool of him. But it still has been issue after issue. It is a 95 Bayliner. I know not the best but at the time it seemed to be. So since then it has had a new 4.3 GM v6 put in it with new risers and manifolds, new prop shaft and lower unit rebuild along with a new prop, new throttle cable, ignition switch and the back part of the boat has all new upholstrery. The front still needs to be done. I also had to replace the trailer springs due to the heavy ocean use they were shot along with the wheel bearings and tires dry rotted.

Boats are great, just make sure you look it over really well. To me buying new is the only way to go but then my experience I'm sure isn't a good example, we just got a bad deal on our first boat. At least with a new boat you have the warrenty to fall back on if you should have issues.

Do a lot of research and shopping around. If you're not going on salt water, stay away from any boat that may have been in the salt. It does bad things to boats. Try to get a test drive if you can, especially with an I/O. Lots of things with the outdrive you can't see or test on land. As Black02 can tell you, I'd stay away from Bayliners also.

Why are you looking for an stern drive boat instead of an outboard type? I owned two sterndrives in my life and I am getting fed up with the required maintenance and potential problems. On the first boat the outrive to transom seal leaked and it could not be fixed because they told me that the boat transom was warped and fixing required removal of the engine and outdrive and repairing the transom with fiberglass.

On a sterndrive boat you need to replace the water cooled manifolds and risers about every 5 years (more often if used in salt water). They corrode even faster when the boat sits unused. Til sending units fail about every 2 years and they are a pain to replace on some boats. My present boat is a 1996 Chris Craft 21 ft Concpt Cuddy with a 5.0 EFI engine and SX Volvo Penta drive. No problems with the engine or outdrive, but had to replace the alternator recently.

Seems to me that an outboard boat would be easier to live with. If you leave in water for some time, you can tilt the motor out of water. It is also much easier to remove the motor for any repairs. If I get another boat (and that if a big IF) I will probably go with a nice fishing boat with a single 200 HP outboard.

 Ditto

We had a brand new bay-puke when I was growing up. Left us stranded in the middle of White Lake in NC. Not a huge lake, but I remember my old man being quite pissed about that boat on a regular basis.

Wow, small world, White lake is where we go in the summer. We have a place down there. It is only 45 miles from our house so it is a nice get away. Yea White Lake isn't big, or deep, 12' at its deepest point but mostly 6 to 8 feet. I subed my Yamaha Super Jet and without thinking slammed into the bottom. What a wake up call that was.

The lake starts out nice and clear in the spring and come 4th of July weekend it is no long clear. The white sandy bottom can't be seen with all the crap stirred up from the boats and PWC's. Ski Nautique's are the most popular boats on that lake.

We have a 23 foot malibu wakesetter XTI. Bought it new and it has been the best wakeboarding boat i have rode behind in a long time. before that we had a 99 crownline with a tower. it was a quality boat, just couldnt kick up the wake as good. we had some small problems with that. my dad always says that you get what you pay for, espically with boats. i would get the best one you can afford.

$5K for a boat for water sports is going to be very hard to find w/out its fair share of problems that are due to age, lack of upkeep, wear and tear, etc. Good luck with that, and take your cell phone w/ you to call for help. :D

Personally, stay away from well used I/O 4 and 6 cylinder engines. They are usually ran FULL throttle to get anywhere in a decent amount of time. Also, Bayliner, Glasstron, etc. do not age well at all.

Ha! You beat me to it! As Donny always says, "if you buy new, you'll get used."

Shut up, Randy!
