1500 advice?

This is my first post and i have many different questions. Right now i own a colorado zq8 5spd 5cyl. which is a alot of fun to corner with, but the new torque management of pulling timing makes it feel sluggish off the line.

 

Now because of various little issues, i am thinking about trading it to buy myself a single cab silverado. either 4.8 5spd or 5.3 auto. No real towing. just hauling my atv.

 

first off, for 06' chevy hasnt gone to DoD on the trucks yet right? i know dodge went to it for 06' (i wanted a hemi lol)

 

first question: How well can a single cab silverado handle? and how well can it be made to handle?

 

Handling is what made me buy the colorado. the Zq8 is barely a truck while handling. with the 5spd you can squeeze around corners at 60 easily and give you passengers quite a scare

 

next, how is the 4.8 and 5spd for potential performance? i want low 14s atleast.

 

also does anyone go to like autox with their single cab, or are these trucks just too heavy to compete?

There is no DOD system on '06 GM trucks. As far as handling, full size trucks do not handle as well as compact trucks, because of their higher center of gravity, greater width and higher curb weight. If you want handling, your best bet is to go with the Silverado SS model. You get a high output 6.0 liter V8, and suspension upgrades.

 

Expect lower fuel economy when you go to a ful size truck (at least 20%), even worse with the SS model..

There isnt??? 05 there was. The hybrid silverado??? It only comes in the extended cab and if you are looking for a single cab you have nothing to worry about.

 

Dodge has a similar product like the chevy DOD??? HMMM never heard about that

According to the recent reports, all '07 full size GM trucks and SUVs will have this system (so far only used in Impala SS and Monte Carlo ss with the 5.3 liter engine).

I have an 04 silverado ext cab 5.3 auto. I have made a few suspension changes and rim and tire changes and it now handles like a dream.

You can make these trucks handle the way you want. You just have to know where to look. These are the parts that i have put on my truck. Front"$210" and rear"$180" Hellwig Sway bars, 17" x 10" rims with Kumho ECSTA 275 50r 17 tires. The rims and tires lowered the truck by 4 inches which lowered the center of gravity. I also replaced all 4 shocks with the Monroe Sysnsa trac but I may be a little off on the name of the shock but it is just like the Edelbrock IAS.

 

I have a few more modifications down the pipe like evening out the weight distribution from front to back by relocating the battery to the bed and a few other modifications. If you have any questions email me at [email protected]. I will be getting into autoX sometime this year.

On the handling; GM high performance magazine's Red dog silverado had hotchkis swaybars, shocks, i think a 2/4 drop.... anyway the end result was a skidpad and slalom very close to that of a stock 4th gen F-body. Very impressive considering it was a extended cab.

Zq you may even want to check into the joe gibbs model silverados, i think some you can get without the s/c which brings the price down a good bit.Best thing is they come in standard cab i think also most are 5 speeds.

I have a 05 GMC 1500 regular cab wt w/4.3l V6 manual, electric cooling fans as the engine overheat protection package. I don't mind the dod system becuase one could say the same thing for fuel injection. I welcome it and F**d is not doing anything about it. Oh well, only 5 percent of all the trucks have the manual trans and mostly coupled to the V6 and love the 26-28 MPG highway. So like only one truck in the WHOLE lot at the dealership has a 5spd. and it has a V6. My trucks power is under rated passing all of the "auto" trucks that lack the efficiency of a manual. I love my little red truck and wouldn't change a thing. Direct connection is better than the TCC all the time. rubber floor and cloth seats thats a truck not a car. I would recommend getting the last 4.3L v6's. amsoil and a airhog. The use the same air intakes a the larger v8 brethren. Under rated engines. more than 195 hp. they are going out with a bang. also no electric throttles here unlike the v8 models. I will miss the manual trans along with the last of the old Chevy engines.

Yeah, in 2004 they annouced for 2005 about 15 percent of SUV's(Trailblazers Etc.) had DOD installed on some 5.3L V8 and in 2006 a greater number of vehicles had them as for a possibly gen IV 5.3 L. Not in the GMT800 platform as earlier. This is more common than a MT pickup and I think the 5.3L has DOD secrely put in on some of them . The wear is virtually nil in difference in operation and most owner's would not find out until they tear apart the engine or do obdII scanning. they needed to find out how it would do before full line production later. So, Gen IV 5.3l HO means DOD possibly. I like DOD, better than a Cadillac 250 V8 V8-6-4 system. at the same time as D*. the system has the function to evenly distrubute the wear by alternating various cylinder pairs for long run relablity that only makes sense then to only use a certain cylinder pairs all the time.2004 DOD ward's
