Whic differential cover

I just recently purchased a 2005 2500hd 4wd and would like to install an aftermarket diff cover. I loolked at mag hytec and pml covers, and according to the pml cover website they offer two versions of their covers. one with a .375 dia bolt and and another with an 8mm bolt. which one is the correct one? also does any body have any preference on either brand

I would say get the one that holds the diff fluid in.

I know most of the nuts and bolts on my truck are metric, so maybe the metric one is the correct one.

I am also looking at various aluminum rear diff covers since my factory steel one was rusting from day one. I guess I could take it off and paint it but it is a good excuse to buy a nice new aluminum cover.

I have looked at the Mag-Hytec, PML, and ORU covers. I just happened upon the ORU cover when looking for prices on the Mag-Hytec. I emailed ORU this morning about which ring gear size is in my 2005 2500HD CC SB with 6.0L and 4.10 gears. They have two options for the GM 14 bolt, 10.5" and 11.5" ring gears. PML only lists the 10.5" ring gear cover.

The ORU cover looks to be high quality and I've always read good reviews on their other products. Also, the ORU cover is only $160 compared to PML $215 and Mag-Hytec $250. The Mag-Hytec is nice since it utilizes an o-ring for sealing of the cover to the axle but I don't know if it is worth $100 more.

I'll let you know what I find out about the 10.5" vs 11.5" ring gear size.

I have confirmed information on the 14 bolt 10.5" vs 11.5" ring gear sizing. If your 14 bolt rear axle has a pinion gear that bolts into the housing, then it is the 10.5" ring gear. The 11.5" ring gear axle is used on the Duramax and 8.1L combos. Also, the 11.5" rear axle is an AAM axle that is used on both GM and Dodge trucks.

I ordered the ORU black aluminum diff cover for my truck. I should have it by next Monday so I'll let you know what it is like as far as quality. They do not specify bolt sizing so maybe they do not send replacement bolts. No problem for me, I'll just go by stainless hardware to attach the new cover.

thanks cmadz7, i will look at the ORU cover. i am sort of leaning toward the mag hytec just because of the o-ring feature, my friend has the PML version and is trying to get me to buy that one

I've got the Mag Hytec on an '02GMC. It is a nice unit. The o-ring makes it very easy to install. It also has a dipstick to easily check fluid levels, and since it is on the top, the hole can also be used to add fluid if needed. No more putting it in from the side and guessing at the levels. It also has an additional drain plug plus another port if you ever decide on a temperature sending unit. Overall I am pleased with the unit.

I received the ORU diff cover yesterday. It came with hardware and silicone. The hardware they provided was nice plated socket head cap bolts but they were 3/8" bolts. Of course, the OEM hardware on my truck is 8mm. The ORU cover has good build quality. I just "borrowed" some stainless steel metric hardware from work. The only concern I have is the clearance between the aluminum diff cover and the spare tire. The ORU cover is obviously deeper than the stock cover and it is deeper than the PML cover. From initial measurements, I should have 1/4" to 3/8" clearance beween the cover and tire. I'll find out tonight.
