Transmission Problems Under 100k Miles

Recommended Posts

Hi All,

I did a search and couldn't find this as a poll.

I am confident the engine is "bullet-proof" to well over 100k miles, but it appears the transmission is a different story. I'm trying to decide if the extended warranty to 100k miles is worth it. The likelihood of transmission problems will be the deciding factor.

If you have had problems please let me know if you baby the truck, tow with it, drive it like you stole it, etc.

If you haven't had problems AND have gone close to or over 100k miles, please vote.

Thanks,

Chris

2000 Z71 The truck has towed quite often its whole life sometimes light, sometimes alittle too heavy It stayed in the mud pretty often for both work and play for the first 110k or so i am now at 17X,XXX and havent had any tranny work done, although i think its on a slippery slope but not too bad in my opinion oh yah now i drive normal with gas the way it is, but it still tows whenever needed

99 sierra. I drive mine kind of hard (quick accel and such)and I've never had a problem. it has a little over 100k on it and I've had it since ~85k. I don't tow much (horsetrailer every now and then), but I haul ATVs ranging from 500-800 lbs in the bed fairly often.

My 98 had problems at 90k, i installed a transgo kit and it fixed the problem until i reached 160k and had to rebuild it. I believe the problem was the torque converter, but when the tranny was apart, the clutches were worn out and need replacment.

As far as treatment, I beat the crap out of my truck. I have alot of mods to the engine and changed the fluid when I started having problems, then again when I built it. I am currently looking for a 4l80 E for the new motor.

77K miles and no problems yet. I tow a 9K lb RV every season. I also change the trans fluid and filter every spring, it's cheap insurance, and also watch the temp gauge when towing, I don't like to see it more than 210 worst case. It usually won't go above 200 in stop-n-go traffic, 175 on the hiway.

Mine lasted to about 140K and then the 2-3 shift started slipping at WOT. I flogg my vehicle somewhat regularly. I've had my FLT rebuilt/built for about 25K of hard driving with all torque management removed and it is holding up well.

117,000 miles and no problems so far. I usually only tow a trailer two or three times a year and I do not drive her as hard as did since she went over 100,000.

My 2002 Z71 (4L60E) developed a rough 1-2 shift at about 50,000 miles. Seems to be my luck with 4L60E's. I don't think I'm hard on the trans.

I never have any problem with 4L80E's. My '95 K3500 went 155,000 miles before I sold it and still shifted like new. My '05 2500HD is fine with 30,000 miles.

Traded My '99 Sierra Z71 ECSB 1/2 Ton in at 90K+ no problems with Transmission. Towed a 27' Travel Trailer with it, and an occasional Bobcat or small tractor.

105,000 miles 2000 GMC Yukon 2WD, no problems yet. Just maintain them and cruise this forum among others for tips to keep them running. We get 265,000 miles on our Tahoes for our Sheriff's Department and you know we drive hard.

    • .30” of rain all month and it’s been weeks since that. “Mowed” our two properties today for the first time since July 2nd. It only took 30 minutes because all I had to do was level some weeds and saplings in a few problem areas. Everything else is dead.
    • Dealer reported a failed shifter module assembly so the whole shifter is getting replaced. Yet another premature repair… up to $12,000+ in extended warranty payout in only 5 years and 80,000 miles!
    • According to the dealer it’s an internal leak/failure of the compressor.  Again, another failure that shouldn’t happen at only 5 years and 80k miles.  For some reason the compressors must be hard to come by right now, because the truck’s been at the dealer almost a week and they just located a compressor at another dealer several states away today.  We’ll see if this fixes the issue.
    • I'm not sure if this should be a reply on this thread or a new topic, let me know if it's out of place. This my first post. Thanks 85077522 - ACDelco GM Genuine Parts Brake Master Cylinders. Anyone else had to replace this brake master cylinder yet. I didn't do any brake work, it looks like new parts and I've had the truck for about 4k miles. When it started to throw codes I did the calibrations with a bidirectional scanner and got the codes to clear but they came back so i did the routine; base bleed, automated bleed and final base bleed. All that with Bosch ES16-32N fluid (please look it up). That seemed to fix it but 100ish miles later it failed again so I ran the same process but with a pressure bleeder this time and got the same results, fixed for 100ish miles. The original fluid looked bad and I thought I got most of it out. The codes; P25A2, C05B0-00, C2A1B. I can get them to clear but not for long. The C05B0 indicates a leak in the front circuit (which is bone dry) so I'm thinking of doing the bleed process on that front again today and I don't know if that's taboo to just do the front but at this point it seems like it's worth the try anyway. The new master cylinder/module unit is supposed to get here today. But now I'm pretty much convinced this install is over my head. I've called several shops and some mobile guys that I know but this thing is like radio active material scary wise. I did get 2 local shops say they should be able to do it, one says he has the SPS2 programing capability. And with the battery disconnected is there supposed to be pedal resistance, mine is to the floor, then if I pump it I can get some resistance.
    • I wasn’t commenting on your post. Certainly wasn’t arguing. I was making an observation on my long term experience with supposedly proper length of driving for proper heat cycles. Works for me. Although I have seen water or vapor come out of exhaust when vehicles weren’t run very long and shut off. It’s very humid in the morning. Then hot and humid.
