305 to 350 swap questions

Found a '97 Sierra for short money that seems to be in great shape, only problem is it has a 305 and I want (need?) a 350. Truck will just be mainly a winter commuter/errand runner and occasional snowmobile hauler on weekends. My concern is when I tow my sled trailer. It's probably 2800-2900 lbs with 2 sleds and 3500 lbs with 3 in it. My '98 Yukon with 350 and 3.42 gears struggles to maintain speed towing this trailer up steep grades, this truck has 305 with 3.42s and I can only assume even though it is lighter then suv it will struggle more.

 

My old man has had 305s in past and they were dogs towing....I have never known anyone with a vortec 305...are they any better?

 

What would be involved with throwing a 350 long block in it? Does 350 computer have different programming or is it same? Does 350 have different size throttle body? I have a '79 4-bolt 350 in shop....can I rebuild lower end, throw some vortec heads on it then put on all accessories/electronics, throttle body, etc. from 305 or is there any issues??? I know my '79 block has 2 piece rear main, but think I've seen a conversion kit to make 2-piece engines a 1-piece seal engine....will this be compatable with the '97 drivetrain???

 

I know it sounds like a hassle, but don't usually find trucks in this condition this cheap.....might be worht the effort.

Shouldn't have a problem, I think the vortec heads off the 305 will fit...You'll be running premium all the time though, as you'd be upping the compression quite a bit.

The 305 heads are different from the 350 heads. If you use the 305 heads, they have a smaller combustion chambers and will increase the compression ratio. As far as the computer, the 305 and 350 are interchangable, if you would like to reprogram the computer wait 4 me performance can make changes for n ot too much money.

 

The manifolds and accessories will fit between the 2 blocks, most of the sensors are external and connect to covers, but I do not knwo what blocks are usable with the Vortec heads.

Thanks guys, glad to hear computer is compatiable. I would probably buy new vortec heads for the 350...ones on 305 would need rebuild anyways and brand new vortec heads from GM are pretty cheap. I know all the acessories would be interchangeable, but what about the throttle body, do 305 and 350 take the same one?

 

Also does anyone have an answer about the 2 piece rear main seal. I don't know if a 2-piece seal motor can bolt right up to the tranny. :smash:

 

Maybe its just as cheap to just buy a complete 350 vortec long block and swap over all the accessories.

What about the flexplate? Isn't there a different one for each motor? I guess you can just use the flexplate/torque converter combo for what ever engine you are using? Either one should work with the 4L60E I assume?

It shouldn't make a difference, as I believe GM kept MOST of that stuff the same. The only real difference is that the one-piece seal is just that, a one-piece seal. The flexplate and converter should all bolt right up.

That's what I was hoping to hear. I know GM is pretty good at making stuff compatiable, just don't want to get a nasty surprise halfway through a project.

Hey guys. This might sound like the obvious answer, but I think it might be more cost effective just to find a 350 in a yard and rebuild it. Hell, could probably buy one from GM-Parts Direct for not to much money.

 

Tha'd probably be what I'd do.

For a stock motor, I would go to a dealer and get a long block for $1600, the manifold is the same for both motors as well as everything else. (except the exhaust, the 305 is a 2 into 1, and the 350 is a 2 into 2 with a cross over.

I have a tired 4-bolt 350 on the shop floor right now, so I don't need to buy one. Question is (beyond what it takes to swap from 305 to 350) is it possible, and cost effective to rebuild a '79 350 to drop it in a '97 sierra or just buy a new 350 long block from gm that'll drop right in and be brand new. Of course the pride associated with building your own engine goes a long way. :)

I would go for the crate motor in the long run. Too many hitches to hit building your own and if you are like me, you will go overboard and spend more than you budget on cool parts.

 

For my current project, I opted to have a professional build the enging and had it balanced, blueprinted, and all of the fun stuff to go with it. Let the proplr who know do the work.

i am not any expert on any means, but check into the fact that the computer indeed is compatible as well as the PROM chip that it may contain. That memory was all preset at the factory for the 305 engine. Just make sure their won't be any issues with fuel distribution or anything that is computer controlled. I am just saying from a past experience.

you cant use an old block in a new truck if you want to keep the factory fuel injection and computer you have. Something to do with not having places for the sensors. Cant recall at the moment.

 

You'd be better off if you want to go that route to just rebuild it get an adjustable fuel pressure regulator and run a carbed setup.

 

However, why not just ad some power goodies to the 305. I have heard of guys with 300hp 300ft-lbs 305's for relativly little money. start with a tune. throw in a decant cam, and roller rockers. that should be a good start.

The older 2 piece rear seal blocks don't have a spot on the block for the knock senor. Also the 2 piece rear seal use a different bolt pattern for the flexplate than the 1 piece rear seal cranks. GM has a 383 stroker crate motor that they say is a drop in replacement with no need to retune the computer. It is the HT383, it has a larger camshaft than a stock 350 vortec. With that said i would think that you should be able to find a hydralic cam for a older block (vortec uses a roller cam) that would run with out needing a tune. Too much difference form stock and the motor won't run correctly. :banghead::banghead:

    • You can install tailpipes that direct the exhaust sideways vs the OEM one that goes straight back. There are several on the market, do you own research. HOWEVER, you need to make sure the Venturi vents are still intact, otherwise it will throw a engine code. There is a sensor somewhere that detects back pressure on the exhaust. And if it doesn't collect the correct metrics, it will throw the truck into limp mode. 
    • "Teardown" is complete. Head surfaces are clean and ready, new intake is prepped and ready. Coolant drained and water pump is removed, radiator is removed, new hoses and pump are ready.   The replacement intake is also from a '95 (with I think 260k, the odometer said). Noticeably less pitting where it covers the rear coolant passages. I'm not sure if that's a tribute to more frequent use, more frequent coolant changes/upkeep, or if the intake was machined at some point. But it appears I found a good one.   My coolant hoses were original, and the lower hose still retained the factory spring inside. It's not really rusty, but it's got deposits all over it. Unsure if I should re-install it (will thoroughly clean it first). Someone said hose technology has gotten better since 1995 (has it?) and I don't need the spring. I think modern EPDM is what made those hoses last from 1995-2026, so it's a question of how much suction can the water pump really pull, and will it collapse the hose without a spring?   I'm stopped and waiting for parts, however.   When I first brought the truck home, the fan was intermittently hitting the radiator shroud. I could see someone had monkeyed with the shroud (put a bunch of cardboard as a spacer between the upper/lower shroud halves. Someone said the motor mounts have likely failed and the engine has sagged. I wasn't sure I believed that. The engine is really solid in its mounts: To remove the old intake I *just* nearly permanently welded to the heads with freshly cured RTV and gasket snot two weeks ago, I literally had to use the arms on my lift and a chain with a bolt attached to the intake to pull it loose. It almost picked the front of the truck off the ground before ....scuuuuuuuuuuup.... I could actually hear the gaskets tearing and it broke loose and the whole truck settled back down. Motor barely moved.   SO, those parts I'm waiting on... The lower radiator mounts/bushings had completely failed. The radiator needs to be insulated from the rad support, and the bushings help the rad stand at the correct height. The plastic "baffle" was also destroyed at some point. Someone had attached the shroud to it incorrectly, overlapping a joint that should have been underlapped, creating another suspect issue potentially causing things to hit the fan. Broken tabs, side is busted off, and it's perma-formed/bent where it was jimmied incorrectly.   The baffle? Unobtainum. Long since discontinued from GM, of course. Aftermarket/capa/chinese? Also unobtanium. In GM's infinite wisdom, it appears there are at least two different variations whether the Blazer is 2 or 4 door, and I can't yet tell if they shared the same part with the S-pickups. Plan B, if I can't find a viable used one, will be to create a bracket to re-assemble the critical joint I need to seal a gap with the shroud. But that will bug me, it won't be...perfect.   The water pump bolts appear to have been installed with...plumber's putty. I guess, sure, if it works...? I've found a few "backyard fixes" like that. Someone's been here before....   If I can't find someone to jam bamboo under my fingernails to fill my free time this week I think I'll install the driver's power window motor and replace the rear door speaker that's inop. I've got a genuine GM "9.5" ohm working replacement. Why GM used a non-standard resistance....nevermind. Of course they did, you can get more sound from a cheap factory amp that way.   And the saga goes on...

    • I started my install this weekend. Everything was pretty straight forward but I ran into one issue with running power through the firewall. The nipple grommet on my High Country already has a small harness running through it - has anyone else ran into this issue? And on the engine bay side, does the wire basically just penetrate the factory wiring boot? I did this on my '22 Trail Boss and it seems much easier but thats been a few years. My other thought would be possibly drilling a new hole adding a rubber grommet just to the lower left of the factory hole. Thoughts?   Has anyone used a T-harness off the Bose amp and obtained power from there? It seems a little odd that such a small amp needs 3 power leads
    • ///// Ok--Thanks for that info--I could not find yesterday when I looked for the specs on that NAPA filter what I wanted. Their website is not very user friendly. I buy all teh filters for  our three vehicles once or twice a year. Have always run NAPA Gold on everything I own....I buy it thru my Son's account for his business-which he has a Heavy Equipment repair shop-one reason he uses NAPA so much-they have such a full line of coverage for just about anything/anywhere- He gets s  good discount because of volume bought.
