broke my airbag clock spring while fixing steering gearbox

Hey everyone, to make it easy, I posted part numbers, details of my truck, and photos of what i'm needing. This seems like an extremely hard part to find on the net. Was hoping someone had a good lead. Check the link below:

You might want to go to the dealer on this one: it is your life that you are risking to save a few bucks. I think those units are around $150 from GM. Just a thought, but you may want to purchase the clockspring with the steering wheel control wiring in case you ever want to add these controls to your truck you will only need the steering wheel at that point.

Thank you for taking me down lecture street, I know you're only trying to help, as to having most parts repaired/replaced on any truck are life savers for that matter. The dealership wants $135 for it. It seems that its pricing is based on rarity rather than complexity. (Ribbon spring with 6 wires). All else fails, I will go to the dealership, but I was hoping to find some resources that weren't obvious.

Sounds like you need to buy a Factory Service Manual when working on a modern vehicle.

 

Get the OEM manual it will save you a lots of money & headaches.

The Steering gearbox is A1-Cardone, and I also have the Hanes Manual 99-05 (which is the ONLY repair manual). If they had a Factory Service Manual on the shelf i could buy, you're right, I wouldn't have the loss of money and/or headaches...

 

Anyways, I just won an auction on eBay. I'm out $84 bucks, case closed. Thank you for everyone's efforts!!

 

EDIT: reference to the steering gearbox was that there was also no mention of caution for the clock spring..

I checked Dorman OE Solutions because they offer several Clock Springs for problem units. They do not offer one yet for your truck. From past history, if they do not offer it, it is usually an OE only item.

 

BTW I just discovered that DOR OE Solutions is about to intro an Int Shaft for GM trucks. I do not have part #s yet. Dorman's parent company is in the Salvage business in a very big way. Most of their OE Solutions product was introduced because they had a tremendous demand in the Salvage side of their business.

The reason this part costs a litttle more is that all the contacts are gold plated and the coils themsleves (at least on the older units) are gold plated. Yes, GM could sell it for $20 and make a profit, but for the most part this is an oddball to replace.

 

With respect to your comment that all parts on a truck are safety related, I would agree. However, if your airbag deploys because of static going from your hand to the steering wheel and you happen to be doing 80 MPH in traffic that is a very different animal than some part rattling or failing gracefully over time.
