Why 2 Mufflers?

OK, anyone have the stones to cut off the 2nd, small muffler on their GMT-900 truck to see what it sounds like? I'd like just a little more sound from my exhaust without having to spend several hundred $$ on a cat-back system. The stock exhaust on my '03 is just about perfect, but my new truck leaves me wanting a little more. Just wondering why we have 2 mufflers and what it would sound like to remove the small one back by the rear axle.

Is that second one actually a muffler or just a resonator?

If it's a resonator, removing it should give you a little more throaty

sound. Don't know how that would affect the performance.

Yeah, could be a resonator. My GTO had 2 of them ahead of the mufflers instead of behind them but who knows. Maybe I need to be the guinea pig to cut it off and open it up to see what's inside.

The exhaust on the NBS 6.0L, not sure if the 5.3s and 4.8 are the same or not, joins the left and right cylinder banks prior to the muffer (at least the large muffler) then runs back to the smaller muffler/resonator then out the back under the bumper. My '03 with the 6.0 doesn't have the 2nd muffler/resonator and it sounds real good for a stock system. Several people even ask what cat-back system I have on it.

Whack it off and see how it sounds. I know a guy on the chevyavalanchefanclub website who did that to his nbs 5.3 and it made it significantly throatier. I keep seeing all these new exhaust systems for the nbs trucks but none say there for the 6.0??? What's up with that.

Interesting... Someone post if they do this mod on the 6.0...

Also, can someone comment on if the Sierra Denali has this "second" muffler/resonator?

Yes the denali has an extra resonator also.

Usually the resonator is added to improve the sound of the exhaust. Improvement is in the ear of the beholder however and some people may want a different sounding exhaust. I will say, however, that a loud thrumming at 70 mph can drive one buggy.
