Gmt900 Smoother And More Responsive After 500 Mile Breakin?

Recommended Posts

I've just reached 500 miles following the recommended breakin procedure (varied speeds less than 55 mph etc) and I'm sure the truck both drives smoother and is also more responsive. It was good to begin with, but just feels even better. I know I'm getting more used to driving it, and I drive with a light foot, but does the truck have adaptive engine management systems? I don't think it is just my imagination :)

Also can I expect the mileage to improve? Obviously I didn't buy it for its mileage, but an improvement would be nice.

The truck (transmission) is learning how you drive. Mileage does get better with time. Best I've seen has been just under 18 (all highway). A country road/highway mix usually gives me about 14. This includes towing 2 jet skis once in awhile.

Thanks. I've a long way to go till 10k, but it gives me something to look forward to. :D I'm about 12 mpg with mainly city driving which is about what I expected.

Hi guys, new here. I currently have a Dmax, but am seriously considering going to a gasser. I drove the new 6.0 with the 6 spd and while it ran hard with your foot down and the RPMs up I am concerned how it would pull a trailer. My 5er and small toy trailer probably weigh about 11-12k. Will this engine pull that kind of load in the mountains? Any info would be appreciated.

My 6.0 woke up in a BIG way around 8-10 thousand miles.

What did you install then? :D

I imagine being transported with the suspension fully compressed could alter the ride as it returns to normal.

I wish I could say that I installed something...But no.

It just started running a bit stronger and getting better mileage about then for some reason. Lots of guys on TrailblazerSS.com have had the same thing happen.

But then...Lots of guys on TrailblazerSS.com have grenaded their transmissions too...Just like me. :D

I have had both... Don't do it!!!

Yeah, I just traded my 6.0 in for a new D-Max and I tow a 25 foot enlosed trailer. The difference between the gas and the D-Max is quite large. I would never go back to the Gas.

I just bought my 2007 LT-2 crewcab D-Max, only 400 miles on the truck now. Anyone want to give some advice on taking care of the truck or brake-in? I've been driving it under 55 and taking it easy so far... Thanks.

The truck is Black with a Black leather intiorer, hard to keep the paint looking great. Seems like the dirt is drawn to the black color :}

You can just drive the truck "normal". I believe the owners manual might give some info about that but I just avoided wide open throttle runs and being hard on the brakes for the first 500 miles. Other than that, just get it and drive

The Edge Tuner will be a good upgrade when it's released. I'm one of their beta testers and very happy with the results.

Any issues so far? My worry is the old "you can't get something for nothing". I worry that programmer has to by it's very nature have trade offs. It could be mileage or perhaps longevity but if it's giving you more power it has to be getting that power from somewhere.

Yeah, I know the gasser won't pull with the Dmax. I'm just tired of the diesel oil changes, additives, can't find diesel everywhere, etc. I'm also concerned about the new emissions stuff, both from a reliability standpoint and the heat in the exhaust on regen. I work in agriculture and don't want to be starting fires in dry fields.

As to break in on a new one, I had a trailer on mine before 500 miles. Had a Edge juice box on by 5000 miles. The extra power may take it's toll on engine and drive train life but shouldn't hurt milage. Don't think you'll need it though. A good friend has been through a 7.3, 2 6.uh ohs, and a 5.9. He now has a '06 Dmax and it out pulls any of the others and they all had add ons.

Mine is now aproaching 120k and the only problem so far was injectors at about 115k. Been pretty happy with it so far. Just time to move on.

Well thanks for the advice, I'll probably look to a few mods later in the year. I was wondering if anyone in the group has a new D-Max and what I can expect to get for mileage? Thanks.

15.9 City

20 Highway

Both with no load.

The best I got was 22 MPG but that was with a steady 55MPH and no stops

I have a Toy Hauler that weighs about the same as yours, my Duramax had No trouble pulling it up hill and passing peope. My new truck 2007 2500HD gasser DOES NOT pull the same at all. Don't get me wrong, it pulls it just fine, but the passing power is not there like the Duramax. In 40,000 miles I only towed a little over 4,000, so the only time I miss the Duramax is when I hook up the trailer. If you pull your trailer a lot you may want to keep the diesel, but as far as daily use I love this new truck. I also got the 4.10s and I get about 7MPG pulling my trailer, but I pull faster than most people I guess(I used to anyway). In town I get about 11-12MPG, unloaded on the highway the best I h ave got was 16MPG. But I have noticed the truck is getting better MPG the more miles I get on it.

    • We have now!  2027 GMC Sierra  Early look, but I'm a GMC guy and so far I think I like the looks of the Chevy better.
    • HD at the moment, are kinda their own deal.  How LTZ sells on those vs on 1500, there is a difference.   They are merging most of the mid trims on 1500.  LT, RST and LTZ are replaced by one trim, Silverado.  LT and RST are a BIG portion of sales.    Bad naming choice aside, the new Silverado trim will offer the spread of options that those three trims offered.  So expect to see things like the tech package for example, and memory seats.  And LT Trail Boss will now just be "Trail Boss" (formerly LT Trail Boss) but will offer content spread like the new Silverado trim will.  The press photos showed the Trail Boss (formerly LT Trail Boss) has access to Super Cruise now, which on the current truck was High Country only.       Here is the Trail Boss interior.  Memory seats and Super Cruise are present.  All things the LT Trail Boss it replaces, and the RST it was based on didn't get on the current gen.  You had to go to LTZ or ZR2 for memory seats, and High Country for Super Cruise.
    • I installed a Hellwig rear sway bar on my 21 Sierra SLT, it made a huge difference on how the truck handles, no body roll, the trucks much more planted now. Not sure of the suspension differences between the 21 and 26,  if its body roll your having a sway bar will solve it.
    • So a follow up and my fix. I found in online searches the live data to look at on a scan tool to verify the fuel tank pressure sensor was working.  It showed an spec number towards the lower end of the rang, but in spec.  Then while it was running opened the gas cap and the pressure should change.  It didn't change even a tiny bit.  The data for the purge valve said it was open...never changed. So then I measured the voltages on the plug for the fuel pressure sensor and they matched what it should be.  So local car quest parts had the sensor in stock...it was a bit of a pain to remove and an even bigger one to get it to actually go back in.  It helped to unbolt the driveshaft and bungie cord away from the gas tank to give a bit more room to work. So fuel tank pressure sensor in I cleared the code, and started it up.  I went to the scan tool's live data and... Eureka! The pressure number was different and fluctuated a bit.  So took it on a short drive and pressure number varied saw the purge valve go from closed to open and back to closed.  Drove it to and from work for roughly a week plugged in the scan tool no codes.  I took it in to get tested and passed.  In my state's infinite wisdom (oops meant greed), since I pushed the test with the maximum extensions I have to take it back in by Feb '27 to 'get it back up to date', then my next test won't be until Feb '29.
