Does your wife drive around with the E brake on? :shakehead::crackup::crackup:

Seriously. We need a little more info. How many miles? Is it disc/drum or 4 wheel disc? Have you ever done front brakes? Do you use your E brake? It seems a bit odd for the rears to wear out first.

All of my past vehicles have worn the fronts 3-4 times faster than the rears.....but this truck the rears are wearing faster than the fronts. But at 77K miles, I would say the wear on rears are about 10K miles more than the fronts. I will be changing all corners though. All of parts are sitting in my garage now, just hoping it'll get down to 80F during the day in garage sometime soon.

if both are replaced at the same time fronts should wear out quicker i think because like a motorcycle 60-70% front and the rest rear ... i'm sure i'll be corrected soon tho :shakehead:

the fronts should wear out first .. that does sound like a parking brake jog or two ...

when you stop a good amount of your trucks 'mass' shifts to the front wheels (depending on how stiff your suspension is etc) ... so it gets the most work .. the rear ones are just kinda along for the ride ...

Rears. 4 wheel disc on my 00. I think this is why gm went with drums on the rears a few yrs back. 1st rears changed at 18K miles then again at 48K. I have a little over 68 so far. I would say it is due mostly to road debris getting in the rear . Fronts have a bunch of pad left ill probably have to change the rears one more time before I need to even touch the fronts

On my 04 1500 with the four wheel discs the rears wore out faster also. They are pretty small pads.

That's just wrong!

But when it's 53 here and -2 there we won't feel so bad.

My dad's '99 3/4 ton (4-wheel disks) is still running the stock fronts at 345,000 km's and counting. The rears were switched out at around 310,00. I am pretty sure there's more pad to the fronts in anticipation of more wear. Last time we checked, they still had a good portion of the fronts left to go too. Pretty amazing when it spends a lot of time hauling our fifth-wheel, flat deck, and stock trailers on the farm, and they will probably make it 'til he moves onto a new truck.

It's been my experience that the 99+ GM trucks wear the rears almost as fast, and often faster than the fronts with 4 wheel disc. Road crap and water gets in the rear pads, and more often, in the caliper sliders. This is why almost every Chevy that comes in with the rear brakes gone has all 4 slider pins totally seized and as a result of this, the inside pads totally burned out, often with a good outside pad still. Frequent caliper services (cleaning/lubing sliders) helps a bit. Those aftermarket sheilds for the rear calipers don't do a thing. Most of it, though, is the nature of the design and there's not much you can do. This is why GM went back to the rear drums for a bit.
