I've heard many people talk about installing Katzkin covers. How difficult is this to do for a fairly reasonable do-it-yourselfer?

 

I installed them on my NNBS '07 Ext Cab. The rear seats were a piece of cake. Took longer to unbolt and unhook them then it did to take off the factory covers and install the Katzkins. The head rests were also easy as long as you use a vacuum cleaner hose and put it up to the foam. The front seats were not too bad, though the driver's side was more difficult with the power seat motor - not a lot of room to work around. The center console was a real bugger, but I just took my time and got through it without any major issues. The seat backs for the front seats were something that I just recently finished up on. Took me awhile to think of how to best adhere the material to the back panels.

 

There are a few other often overlooked items. Have to disconnect the battery's negative cable and let things sit for at least a couple of minutes before disconnecting any wiring at the front seats. Otherwise, you can pop an air bag. Also, you need to have the seats re-zeroed at a dealership for the weight sensors that communicate with the air bags.

 

If I had it to do again, I probably would. It's time consuming and people who say they did it in four hours -- God bless 'em. It took me one afternoon to do the rear seats, and about six hours to do the front seats, and about five hours to do the center console. I spent endless hours researching the subject and talking with one of the techs at the dealership before I attempted this.

These things are brilliant. I went to the katskinz website in order to see if they have a canadian retailer, and no luck - anyone have a website or somthing for a canadian retailer?

Does the ebony seat issue carry to the impalas? We have a 2008 impala with the ebony interior, and were wondering if we should be watching for this issue or not. We only have 500 miles on it so its too early to tell if it will be bad or not yet.

We have a 2007 Impala, new body style. She doesn't have the ebony cloth, but a lighter gray. It is defintely a different type of material. I can't imagine why the ebony would be any different.

If everytime you get out of you vehicle it looks like a couple of hairy dogs were screwing each other on the seats and shaking fur everywhere, then yes, you have the ebony seat problem.

this is a terrible thing that gm has done to all 900 owners. seriously, i could not imagine doing this to any of my clients, tell them i can supply them with a fix then retract it, they would leave my business. yet we all stay and suffer with the linty seats. i am honestly tired of cleaning my truck seats.

 

honestly gm you won, you get the prize for breaking me down, i hang my hat to you, you broke my spirit, now fix my seats!

I am looking at 2 trucks, one has the light grey cloth and one has the black.

 

Both of them are LT2 trucks so they have a much different material on the center portion of the seat, but it looks like the side sections are probably the same as LT1.

 

Was this addressed at all in the 2008 models?

Is the LT2 seat any better than the regular seat with regard to this issue?

I'm sure black is worse, but is this also a problem on the light grey?

The black cloth seats are the linty ebony seats, and they suck. I use a full roll from a lint roller about every week to week and a half. I contacted Clint from the recommendation above and he has provided me with a price to do the seats with Katskins, and I will probably order the seat covers soon. It gets tiring and frustrating to de-lint the truck every couple of days. Yes GMC, you win. I will change the seat covers out of my own pocket so you do not have to deal with me complaining about this anymore. I am quite sure with the state of GMC that replacing customers seat covers is at the bottom of the priority list.

My 2008 Silverado is the premium ebony and it has the same problem. I spent 30 minutes with a roll of packing tape getting rid of MOST of the lint. Pull out a length of tape and fold it back around the roll so it works like a lint roller. Hint... Fold a short (1/2") section of tape under first so you have something to grip to tear off the lint covered tape. You're gonna need to do the 4-5 times befoer you have delinted the front and rear seats. What a pain. Guess I'm going to call the dealer and get added to the list of disatisfied customers.

Anyone looking at an 07 or 08 Silverado or Sierra be warned - DO NOT GET THE EBONY CLOTH SEATS ON THE LT TRIM MODELS!!!!! You will be sorry! :thumbs: GM will never fix the problem for the trucks already produced!

too late....i just took an LT2 w/premium ebony cloth over the LT1 w/leather. hopefully it subsides with time as others suggest. or i'll just throw some leather in it. i'll just have to see for myself how bad it is i guess.

I called my dealship again today and talked to the service manager, again. I asked if there was an update on the ebony seat lint problem, and of course he said no. I told him that I cannot carry on with these seats as it is too much of a pain, and I am going to change out the seat covers with Katzkin leather. He is going to talk to the area service rep, tell my story and see if GMC can help with the cost. Doubt that anything will come from it. I have been e-mailing Clint at [email protected]

850-819-0818 and he can get me the Katzkin seat covers at $563.00 plus shipping. A local place here wil install for $500.00. So that is about $1200.00 to get the ebont seat covers off and the leather ones on.

      I agree, simplicity and reliability matter more as vehicles get more complicated. A V8 work truck option with fewer electronic features and a stronger warranty would definitely appeal to a lot of buyers who use their trucks for real work. Customizing it with trusted outfitters is often the best way to get exactly what you need

      I’ve heard similar complaints from newer vehicles where the factory “premium” systems don’t always live up to expectations. A good installer should be able to improve the sound without turning it into a bass-heavy setup. I’d look into upgrading the front speakers, adding a quality DSP amplifier, and possibly improving sound deadening first—those changes usually make a much bigger difference than just adding a subwoofer. Hopefully someone local can recommend a reputable installer in the Las Vegas/St. George area.

      Do you remember that Harley Davidson was more successful (solvent) when it produced about 60% of the market demand (by design) and forced wait times of up to three years? Even when your turn came around it was, "Take what we are giving you or move to the back of the line and start over". HUGE markup's were 'normalized' and dealer killed. 40% markup and no floor plan? What's not to love? Greed will kill them yet. They have surplus production and customer base is tanking. And still they think nosebleed pricing will work.

      The engine was done as part of the 6.2 recall?   You'd have to see if your VIN also has the 6.2 engine special coverage on it.  Coverage number is N252494003.  If you have this, your engine is covered under this and NOT the GM replacement part engine warranty which is 3yr/100k from the date of install.  The 3yr/100k mi warranty is in effect for non warranty purchases.     This is not any different if it was replaced under warranty without a recall or special coverage.  So if you had a 5.3 and it popped at 3 years in at 50,000mi during the 5yr/60k powertrain, the replacement engine would not get the 3yr/100k, and instead gets the remainder of the 5yr/60k as coverage.     So N252494003 gives 10 years or 150,000mi of coverage, which ever comes first, starting at the vehicle in service date.  So if your in service date is 01/01/2022, N252494003 gives you special coverage of the engine until 01/01/2032 or 150,000mi, whichever comes first.  So if your start date was 01/01/2022, you'd have left 5 years and 4 months (lets round to august 1st), or 62,000mi left of coverage.   So you need to know your in service date to know how much coverage is left.
