4 Wheel Low

I put my 07 nbs z71 in 4 wheel low for the first time today.Ive had it for a month but havent tried it. Is it normal to make a loud pop under the truck when it engages and disengages.Its the auto 4 wheel drive type.

Every vehicle I've had with an electric motor engagement system, be it Ford or GM, has made a loud "clunk" when 4-LO was engaged.

I have an '06 and makes the same noise. Scared the crap out of me the first time it happened.

Yes, the transfer case provides a nice clunk to assure us that it's in 4LO.

 

Were your rolling some when you engaged it? I've found rolling at 1-2mph makes it go in a little easier.

From the owners manual......"It is typical for your vehicle to exhibit

significant engagement noise and bump when shifting between 4 wheel

low and 4 wheel high ranges or from neutral with the engine running".

This has been discussed before with the '99-'07 body style 4x4s and it's just a normal part of the operation. I should note, however, that this appears to truly be a 'normal' situation and not the definition of normal that GM sometimes likes to throw around, which is:

I've tried several different methods of engaging in 4LO, but like Gozer said, if you're not rolling a little bit, it's usually a horrible bout of gear clashing sounds.

 

I think the easiest method is to kill the engine then switch into 4LO. Of course, I imagine this doesn't work too well with the auto transfer cases.

My truck has the manual t-case and it has to be rolling 1-3 mph to get it into 4lo, if its not then it will just grind grind grind, same thing for going back to 2 wheel drive.

Yep manual cases are a different story, don't get stuck between gears because they will make some nasty noises. But with the push button some loud noise would be considered normal operation. Just always make sure that your transmission is in neutral when you are shifting in and out of 4-low.
