Steering Wheel Controls

Recommended Posts

I installed a new steering wheel in my 2003 Silverado Z71 as well as the new clockspring harness. I took the truck to the dealer today, and they said that the GM Tech Line "did not recommend reflashing the BCM, as it will cause other issues". I asked "What issues?". The service writer had no answer, just that they wouldn't do it since GM recommended against it.

Is the dealer or GM full of BS?

or,

Can I buy a BCM off a junked truck that had the controls and plug it in?

Anyone with a similar experience?

I'd go to another dealer and see what they say about reflashing your BCM.

Hook'em Deerhunter! You watching the game? Yeah, i'll try Henna Chevrolet, my uncle is the GM of their body shop, although, the reason the first dealer wouldn't do it is due to the fact that the Gm Tech Line recommended against it. The were willing to try until GM put the curb to it.

Ant thoughts on using a junked BCM?

hey goatman what dealer said no? I bought all of my vehicles from Henna and they are very up front with what is going on with the vehicles and what GM will allow and not allow.

Capitol, I'll do my best to screw you over, Chevrolet. I know, "If you have family that works at Henna, why would you go any where else?" I live in South Austin, and going up I-35 is a witch. They were up front at Capitol, although I asked them to pull a nail from my tire, and they said I needed a new one for $400.00.

Still, same question, can I use a junked BCM? This seems like a quicker alternative to reflashing the BCM.

Well it may activate the controls but it may also shut off some other functions if the donor vehicle did not have things like heated seats memory recall or other crap that is different between models.

yes it would be plug and play for the BCM with the exact same options (or very similarly equipped). I have heard nasty things about Capital Chevrolet, plus I live up north so Henna is less than a mile away from me.

Even if you get one with the same options I think you will have to have it programed to your vin.

I am going to add the steering wheel controlds and clock spring soon. I will also be looking for a Dealer that is cooperative. They don't like to call the tech line and GM may not like it It can be done. Has been done on many other forums. You will have to find a dealer who is familiar with this procedure.

Let us know what you have to do.

may the force be with you,

I'm going to try to locate a donor BCM first. Yup, Capitol tried to sell me a Z71 before I found the one I have. They showed me a "fake" Carfax report. I went home and purchased one myself, and the results were far different. I gave the service department the benefit of the doubt, but I guess that was my own stupid fault. That dealer has sealed their fate with me!

Any idea what a new BCM would cost from a dealer or parts warehouse?

Wouldn't those things require a BCM reflash? Back to square 1?

take it to a dealership for reflash, I looked at the BCM on dealerworld and it has to know the correct Theft Deterrent (Passlock) in order to allow the engine to crank (if you swap just the bcm, you will never be able to restart the truck). If you take the truck to Henna, ask for David Shah (Assistance SM) and he will tell you right up front if this can be done or not, I will try to find his card when I get home with his contact information.
