I need to get a new plastic cover thingy that covers the top of the tailgate. Does anybody know of a part number? Its for a 01 2500HD. I tried to google a few times but have been unable to find the GM part number.

thanks

OEM one might go down a little further, but the holes should be no problem might not use them at all it just sticks on, I believe those holes are for mounting on for a flush & level fitment.

Guys................Remember that ALL GMT-800 tailgates have the holes

and inserts for the "whaletail" even the 2500/3500s with the plain flat

gate cap.

Also note that most aftermarket flat gate caps are shorter and do NOT

cover the bolt holes in the tailgate.........................

The genuine GM 2500/3500 gate caps are longer and cover the bolt holes.

Found this out the hard way when my bud removed his whaletail because

he installed a bed cap.................geo

I have the OEM tailgate cover on my truck. It is the same one that comes with the GM bedliner. They supplied about 10 self tapping screws with the tailgate, but I was in no mood to drill ten holes in it, so I used 3M double sided tape along the edges of the tailgate to secure it. It is also bolted down with 2 tailgate handle bolts so it cannot fly off even if the tape came loose. So far so good - had to replace several tape strips over two years, but no big deal. If you do not care about drilling holes in your tailgate, then the attachment method will be more secure for sure. I am going to install a bedrug in my truck soon (already have it in the box0 so the tailgate cover is coming off (and no ugly holes left to show and rust!).
