With the price of diesel, that had better do 30 MPG when it comes out.

Yea no kidding

When the fuel truck came by a few weeks ago, even at farm fuel prices, diesel was 5c a litre higher. It's somewhere between 10 and 15c a litre higher at the pump. I do beleive we are coming to the point where the only people that will be buying diesels are those that need it to pull a good sized trailer.

You might have a good point I guess we'll see what happens.

Diesel at $ 3.60/gallon at the local BP station here in central Florida today. :)

I have three diesel vehicles (none a GM truck) and I am not happy about this.

I am going with the Homogeneous-charge compression gas engine thats in the new CTS Cadillac and trucks will have it in 2012 when the GMT1000 comes out. Better performance, economy without the high cost of the Diesel option.

Good article and cool engine design, will be interesting to see when it comes out. I think the days where diesels were an economical choice are over, now they will be for work.

The only thing that I wonder about the homogeneous-charge combustion is if it is going to put out the power that the current engines have. This new technology making me think about all of the stories I heard about from the 70's and 80's when trucks could hardly move themselves.

The new 4.5 diesel will give the duramax a run for it's money in the power dept. So don't worry.

Actually the first generation of the DI engines is in the CTS and its a 3.6L 304hp compaired to the port injected 267hp. Next generation the HCCG engines will have 3.6L in cars & up to 370hp. Engine displacement will be getting smaller in both cars & trucks to pass fuel economy standards starting in 2012

I agree it should @hit&get just add a tune and stand back. It'll be cool to have the extra engine choice as an option in the1/2 ton truck.
