Custom Tune

When I got my custom tune they told me to beware of my drive shaft that if I go over 100mph that the shaft can snap and that I would be better of replacing it with a 03-99 two piece drive shaft. He said that it was due to the fact that my truck is and extended cab. Has anyone ever heard of this? :dunno:

That sounds a little bizarre. Why would your driveshaft snap if your going a certain speed? Maybe if your doing 10 mph in reality but your tires are moving 100 mph on ice and you hit dry pavement?

Anything can break but I would be way more concerned about U joints. Dshaft falling out at that speed could turn you into a beef kebob.

Yea souds odd to me too but he told me that it has happened a few times.

No way it will snap, now if you have like a 800 HP and 1000 torque and pull a big hole shot yeah it will twist and snap a U joint. Sounds like he is try to get more money out of ya. Speed has nothing to do with snaping a drive shaft.

The only way I see snapping the driveshaft would be if you were romping on the throttle alot, or towing more than you can handle, or if rust rots away the yolk area.

 

& I would imagine a 1 piece driveshaft would be much better than a 2 piece

On what Vmax said. the amplitude of vibration the u-joints will see is a function of speed and balance of the shaft. With a longer driveshaft, the could have "potential" for more unbalance. Bottom line, how often are you going to go 100 mph and for how long????

 

Are the new drive-shafts aluminum? Again, vibration and balance would be the cause. But I guess the area where the aluminum-steel yoke meet, could loosen up. :dunno:

 

Anyway, 100 mph, how often.

Was going to say the same thing.... whether you go 100 with or without a tune makes no difference. 100 mph is 100 mph. Second, you won't get enough power increase from a tune to affect it anyway.

I've yet to even try to hit 100mph but if your drive shaft is that out of balance, you should already be feeling some effects at 65-70mph. The vibrations, etc. should increase exponentially with speed but they'd certainly be present at those speeds too if there truly were a problem.

 

Your drive shaft has no idea whether your vehicle has been "tuned" and will not be affected differently by one. I understand there is a speed limiter on these trucks but again, if you can hit 95 and aren't feeling the truck shaking like a mofo and ready to fall apart, hitting 100 isn't going to be any different.

 

Maybe the guy who told you that just wasn't very clear about the point he was trying to get across.

Maybe their lawyers make them say that because one person had a problem and that became a bigger problem.

Doesn't a 2 piece have a center support? 3 points of support.

Less rotating mass than one looooong tube that will amplify any im-balance.

Yea what I think he meant was that if you go over 100 that they do get out of balance and then it all goes to S***. I don’t think I will be doing over 100 very much but it is still a worry. And yea the drive shaft is aluminum.

    • We've done a bunch of them.  Very common failure.  They don't sell the park position switch separate from the shift control assembly which is stupid, because they ended up selling a switch on some other products like 2016-2019 Malibu, 2018-2019 Traverse, 2019 Blazer, and another car or two as those were having the same issue for years (but these have a console mounted shifter not column mounted).
    • .30” of rain all month and it’s been weeks since that. “Mowed” our two properties today for the first time since July 2nd. It only took 30 minutes because all I had to do was level some weeds and saplings in a few problem areas. Everything else is dead.
    • Dealer reported a failed shifter module assembly so the whole shifter is getting replaced. Yet another premature repair… up to $12,000+ in extended warranty payout in only 5 years and 80,000 miles! 
    • According to the dealer it’s an internal leak/failure of the compressor.  Again, another failure that shouldn’t happen at only 5 years and 80k miles.  For some reason the compressors must be hard to come by right now, because the truck’s been at the dealer almost a week and they just located a compressor at another dealer several states away today.  We’ll see if this fixes the issue.  
    • I'm not sure if this should be a reply on this thread or a new topic, let me know if it's out of place. This my first post. Thanks 85077522 - ACDelco GM Genuine Parts Brake Master Cylinders. Anyone else had to replace this brake master cylinder yet. I didn't do any brake work, it looks like new parts and I've had the truck for about 4k miles. When it started to throw codes I did the calibrations with a bidirectional scanner and got the codes to clear but they came back so i did the routine; base bleed, automated bleed and final base bleed. All that with Bosch ES16-32N fluid (please look it up). That seemed to fix it but 100ish miles later it failed again so I ran the same process but with a pressure bleeder this time and got the same results, fixed for 100ish miles. The original fluid looked bad and I thought I got most of it out. The codes; P25A2, C05B0-00, C2A1B. I can get them to clear but not for long. The C05B0 indicates a leak in the front circuit (which is bone dry) so I'm thinking of doing the bleed process on that front again today and I don't know if that's taboo to just do the front but at this point it seems like it's worth the try anyway. The new master cylinder/module unit is supposed to get here today. But now I'm pretty much convinced this install is over my head. I've called several shops and some mobile guys that I know but this thing is like radio active material scary wise. I did get 2 local shops say they should be able to do it, one says he has the SPS2 programing capability. And with the battery disconnected is there supposed to be pedal resistance, mine is to the floor, then if I pump it I can get some resistance.
