Ok.....Saturday night I was riding around the woods with some friends drinking and I was spinning my tires in the dirt and started accelerating in like 2nd gear, well I noticed that my rpm's were high so I pushed my gear shifter up to D, well me being drunk I pushed it too far and it went in reverse. I was going about 15mph and then shifted to reverse. I realized immediately what I had just done and dropped it to neutral to just calm the tranny down.

Ok...so after I did that, I turned my truck off for about 5 minutes to just give it a breather and made another drink and shot at a fox. I came back and turned my truck back on and reved the engine a little bit to make sure we were good to go, and I heard a high pitched noise from the tranny.

So tell me....how bad did I **** up my transmission.

Oh and new exhaust clips coming soon.

So you were driving AND shooting a gun while drunk? :shakehead:

Remind me never to come to your part of Florida.

Not real smart dude.

Ok...I wasn't that drunk, I had only had one so far. I was in my private woods, and I always carry a gun while in the woods, we have bad coyotes out here.

Sorry to disappoint you man.

Drinking/driving/shooting/destroying transmission all at the same time = DUMBASS!!

Your own land or not, thats just a mixture for something to go wrong.

Don't get me wrong, I was young and stupid at one time too and I did a few things that weren't real bright. But to this day I consider myself very lucky I never hurt anyone or myself.

Just think before you act and DON'T EVER think: "It won't happen to me, that stuff only happens to other people".

Driving recklessly, especially while drinking and using firearms to boot is simply flirting with disaster.

Ok, I am done lecturing now.

Trust me, I have been in that situation and it has happened to me. I'd rather not talk about it though, horrible horrible night.

I don't mind you lecturing me. But anyways...how bad do you think my tranny is? The high pitch noise is gone.

Is the truck driveable? If it seems to drive ok, I would change the tranny fluid, and drive it until it dies.

The 4L60's are not the strongest around and you probably shortened the life of it quite a bit with that stunt. I think what usually goes bad in these is the 2nd gear sprag and that takes out reverse and overdrive also. When it goes, you'll be left with 1st and 3rd if I remember correctly. About $1400 to rebuild. We are having some fun now, aren't we.

I have a 1999 Suburban K1500 5.7 4L60E that has just started making noise: when tranny shifts into overdrive and is in overdrive, and in reverse. No noise in other gears, absolutely no slippage in any gears. Changed the tranny filter and fluid; it has 139k miles. Tranny tech says over the phone that it doesn't sound like a tranny problem but as soon as I shift from overdrive back to drive, the noise disappears. Sounds like you have some experience with this. Any thoughts?

I'd be getting ready to have it rebuilt. When my friend's went out, it was at 140K. I have 118K on mine and keeping money aside. Some will whine in reverse going fast, but that is the straight cut gears.

Any opinion on rebuilding mine vs. a rebuilt tranny?

No opinion other than $$. The $1400 included removing and reinstalling and had a 6 month warranty. Not sure how much a rebuild one costs or what the warranty is but figure in time and/or labor charges to change it. I imagine I'll find out one of these days as I price it out. If you're 4 wheel drive, it could be a little more also. My friend's truck was a 2wd.
