Rear Differential Squeaking ?

Recommended Posts

Hi there!

I have a very annoying squeaking coming from the rear, which I suspect has to do something with the drive shaft since the squeaking tempo increases the more I get closer to 30ish mph. At higher speeds, can't hear it.

Guy I bought the truck from had the differential lubed OK before we did the transaction.

Any ideas ?

Thanks very much!

Is this an ASAP kinda of repair or it can wait a bit ? (No mountain climbing or towing for the moment, that,s for sure)

Well, like anything else driveline related, if you wait to fix it and it actually fails in the meantime, the fix will end up being exponentially more expensive if it takes anything else out with it.

I see, and how long do you think an experienced tech can take to do the job ? I know these joints are like 20$ a piece, right ?

could be the rear u joint or the pinion bearing. u joint is a fairly simple and cheap proceedure, pinion bearing is not

oh man... I'll cross fingers then. My ride has about 65k miles on, which is more likely to be ? U Joints or pinion bearing ?

Hope so. I must say the squeaking increased in intensity since I went climbing this mountain this weekend. Pretty darn steep.

Ok, so I had the rear and front U joints changed, squeaking gone :D Went to a GM dealership since Canadian Tire didn't have the proper lift to work on it but they still charged me 30$ to tell me something I knew already trough here

Anyways, GM charges 20$ more an hour but at least, you get people who know what they're working on.
