Green T Case Fluid

Drained my Tcase on my truck and the fluid that came out was greenish blue, what kind of fluid was in it? I thought it should have been automatic trans fluid? Its not a auto t case, just has the buttons on the dash for 4 hi 4 lo or 2 wd. I replaced with 3 litres of synthetic motor oil through the sensor hole.

The push buttons indicate an auto selection transfer case right?

Running the wrong fluid in it will screw it up... I think I'd make sure.

According to GM that transfer case requires AUTO-TRAK II Fluid - (GM Part No. 12378508). Non auto selecting transfer case uses DEXRON III Automatic Transmission Fluid.

I think I'd get that motor oil out of it before some real harm is done.

That blue/green fluid sounds like the Autotrac 2 fluid that GM came out with. I know when I changed the t-case fluid in my 99, I ended up putting that in. Of course my 99 had the autotrac transfer case.

Here is what my build sheet saids

NP1 - ELECTRIC SHIFT TRANSFER CASE but its not a auto.

Is this your first fluid change? If so the fluid you describe is Auto Trak II (going by color) I'd go back with it if so. What you describe certainly isn't ATF.

You need GM manual transmission fluid,GM part#88861800

This is for the NV263 transfer case (RPO "NP1")

You are fine with the 5w-30 or 5w-40 sythetic motor oil. I have been running it for awhile with no problems, it actually shifts smoother than before. Actually the maker of our t/c suggests using the motor oil because the atf vaporizes from the extreme heat generated by these t/c's. The motor oil has a higher flash point and better lubricating qualities. The auto-trak does not come on the HD trucks.

I put in synthetic motor oil 3 litres will that be all right???

what fluid is this "You need GM manual transmission fluid,GM part#88861800"??

Well,Not to sound like a smarty pants but....Its manual transmission fluid  I know what you mean though,You want to know what kind of manual transmission fluid it is.....Unfortunately I'm not at work,so I can't go look at a bottle to see if it has any specifications or what weight it might me.

I'll have to look tomorrow and post what I find,But I'm thinking theres not even anything on the bottle about the specs. or weight.

This is true,As a matter of fact they don't use AutoTrak fluid in any of the new '07-up GMT900 trucks at all,HD or 1/2-ton...They all use Dexron VI automatic transmission fluid.

You might also want to think about the transfer case "Pump Rub" fix. part # RSG-OPU which you can find at riverside gear. I have the part but have not installed it as of yet. I only have 14,5000 miles on my truck so I have a little time. There is a clip that keeps the t/c oil pump from banging against the magnesium housing, sometimes that protective clip falls out of position causing the pump to rub a hole in the case and allow the fluid to leak out. When that happens a new rear case half must be purchased along with any parts damaged from running the t/c dry. (JAT)
