How Much Weight Can The Tailgate Hold?

Anyone know how much weight i can put on the tailgate when open on a 2008 GMC Sierra 1500?

Thanks!

I'm not sure what they're rated for. But, know there's been between 600-700 lbs on mine. You could always test your's and report back to us.

I had half of a 2000lb pallet sitting on my 07's twice. Not sure of the rating but that was at least 1000lbs and there was no damage either time from it.

Well obviously more then a Tundra, but I would guess around 1000. I have had my rear ATV tires (ATV weighs about 600 pounds) resting on it for about 1000 miles, driving from MN to TX and its just fine.

Hah. I must be a little paranoiac as I see that the tailgate cables have been replaced twice on mine (2003) so I don't even put my own weight on it.

I bought some stainless steel straps for my 2006 Duramax and they impress me as very much stronger than the Chinese cables.

We've had a few folks die locally when the straps broke. Not good.

I've had about 900 on mine (07 Sierra). No problems so far.

I did have a problem on my 01 Sierra as I was loading my Sportsman 500...one broke!! Fortunately, the one "good" one held up and nothing happened. I removed the tailgate to put it back in...wasn't taking any chances!!

Thanks Ed

I was beginning to feel a little unwanted. I was going to say that I probably had my MAX before him, but I wanted to be respectful since I am new and don't want to make any enemies. I'm just here to have some fun and maybe learn a little. Thanks again. Nice to be here. :rollin:

Greg,

Don't take me seriously, I was just giving you a hard time. I am flattered that you copied me in almost every way possible. :P

BTW, I ordered my Vmax on the very first day they (the GMC Vmax's) were able to be ordered (Jan 22, 2007). I had the first GMC Vmax in the Twin Cities area. Picked it up on Mar 10, 2007.
