Jeff, I think your buddy has his question mixed up.

There is no "vacum operating power steering pump". There is however a brake booster system powered from your power steeing pump and it is called Hydro Boost. If your truck is equuipped with hydro boost, you will see a series of p/s hoses connected to the hydro boost unit behind your master cylinder. If you have a traditional vacum booster, you will be able to see a large round booster mounted behind the m cyl with a vacum line connected to it from the intake.

Hope this helps.

Wait,

I'm pretty sure that Hydroboost was an electric pump mounted on the brake booster. The vacuum pressure from the engine goes into the pump and then into the booster. That way if the pressure isn't high enough that pump can raise it to help give constant/better pressures for braking.

The only time I have seen the power steering pump connected to it was in the diesels and I'm not 100% sure but also the big blocks.

I remember this from when I wanted to rig up a Hydroboost system on my 98 because my braking was horrible. I know that SSBC sold a pump that you could do that with at one time.
