Transmission Lunging/clunking When I Stop..

Recommended Posts

I have an issue with my transmission that seems to getting worse. When I stop at a stop light, maybe 10 or 15 seconds later the tranny clunks or jumps. I have the breake on but I can feel it. It also seems to do it when I stop really quick and then take off really fast.

I know General Motors has an issue with these transmissions that you just have to deal with but I think this might be something different. I have read somewhere on here that they had thier transmission "flashed".. Not sure what that means.

I am still under warranty so that's not an issue just wondering if they are going to even notice the issue when I take it to the dealer or have to tear the tranny apart, not real keen on that idea.

Any comments would be appreciated and if you have had the same issues, what did the dealer do to fix it..

thanks,

Sounds like you are going through the same thing as me, it is most likely a slip yoke problem. My dealer stated that lubing it even while under warranty will cost me out of my own pocket as somehow they state it is a regular maintance item. To get the slip yoke replaced with the redesigned nickle plated one they said they would have to feel it while test driving it. Three times so far of course they cant duplicate it. Im now playing phone tag with the gm 1-800 number but that is leading to nowhere, even posted my problems in the ask a gm tech forum and of course not a single responce to it, im thinking this will be yet another in a long list of annoying gm problems that i will be forced to live with.

And we wonder why gm will be out of buisness in another 2 or 3 years, they rather not replace a 300 dollar part to make a customer happy and lose them for good.

Can somebody tell me if my truck has the new nickel plated rear yoke? At what point did GM start replacing these yokes? I have not had any problems with mine yet, but I only have 7,500 miles on the truck. What is the cost of the new nickel plated slip yoke?

I am counting on having to replace the intermediate steering shaft and the slip yoke at my expense in the future. Any other things I shoudl be concerned about? Thankfully, I do not have the AFM on my truck, so one less headache to worry about.

Well just got off the phone with gm and they will do nothing unless they can duplicate the problem on a road test which is near impossible with it's randomness of when it happens, they rather lose a life long customer to a 300 dollar part i guess. I can see why i can buy gm stock with the change left over in my pocket after buying my morning coffee, with customer service like this it wont be much longer until they go belly up! Im a 15+ year lifetime owner of gm vehicals who will never step foot in one of their sales floors again, fool me once shame on you, fool me twice well thats my fault and should of never trusted this company again!

Just curious, what's the big deal? If it leads to failure you've got a 100k warranty anyway. Does it bother you that bad? I can feel it but I've learned to ignore it. Around 90k miles I will bug them enough about it and get them to replicate it if I have to in order for them to finally do something, and also to make record that I've complained so that if something goes wrong even after 100k maybe they'll still cover it.

Yes it does bother me this bad it is annoying as hell when it happens and can not be good for the overall condition of the transmision, i know the problem is the slip yoke, the service adviser agrees with me that it's a slip yoke but yet nothing gets done. I should not have to live with a problem when i know what the problem is and a 300 dollar part will fix it, sorry i use to be one of you guys sticking up for gm but im done, there is nothing to stick up for, hell every person on the gm hotline is not even american and can barley understand what the hell they are even saying.

What about the delayed downshift to first, this could be the problem.

I'm going by what the tsb stated as the issue for a slip yoke, the service adviser has the same truck and says he has to lube the thing once a month for it to not do it which is why they redesigned it with a nickle plating. My experiences describes exactly to a tee the slip yoke issue, once again why gm rather piss me off then to replace a 300 dollar part is ridiculous, not to mention having me bring it in 5 times taking a hour of mechanics time would also make just replacing the slip yoke the best way to find a solution and also the cheapest for them and me!

ok all, it is a slip yoke problem. It will not hurt your trans or drive train in anyway. Basically the rear end is catching up and making the clunk in the yoke after stopping. there is no tsb for the new trucks right now as they currently have the latest and greatest slip yokes.

A guy that comes into my shop works at the gm tech center in michigan and gave me the low down. Mine does it every now and then. It sucks but damn i wish it didnt happen~!

Tacomas have the same problem, its called drivetrain windup. Its not just GM, any automaker is going to give you the run around with problems like this.

I am unfamiliar with the NBS rear ends, is there a grease fitting that you can do it yourself. My last Tacoma (actually all 4 Toyotas I've had) have grease fittings, litterally I would have to pump the grease in and then jump up and down on my bed to push the grease out. I looked like an idiot to the neighbors but it worked, lol.

It is annoying and is a problem in my eyes, i do not have a new truck it is the older body style 05 version which did not have the updated slip yoke on it and is still under warranty for another 45,000 miles. Answer me this since we all agree just like my dealer does that this is a slip yoke issue, and they even have a updated part for it which has shown to eliminate the problem from all the post i have read that had people getting it replaced, then why the hell should i have to deal with it?

This is what i am saying because it makes no f'n sense to just deal with it when we all know what the problem is, and they have a fix for it, but for some reason will not touch it unless their tech feels it while driving!

I understand your frustration as I had it in my 01 Tahoe. I got them to lube it once then I was on my own. I eventually purchased the nickel-plated slip yolk and it got better but did not go away. I just lived with it.

Regarding GM, I can understand why they won't replace something without confirming the problem. Imagine if every Tom, Dick, and Harry went in and said I need this new expensive part. What would that cost GM? I provide warranty service for the products we sell (Industrial Tooling). When a customer wants warranty service, I not only confirm there is a problem but I also confirm that it wasn't used outside it's spec like putting a pipe on a wrench to get more leverage. I've had customers drive their trucks over tools and the request a replacement. Not going to happen.

I know it doesn't help you in your specific situation but GM would spend millions of dollars on parts that may or may not have a problem without trying to confirm there is an issue.
