Preventative Maintenance

Hey guys,

 

I have an '07 2500 HD "classic" with a 6.0 and was wondering what you guys do for preventative maintenance on your trucks? Whether its greasing certain things, etc. Just things you do to prevent future expenses with repairs and parts.

 

I want to keep my truck as new as possible, lol.

Well for starters, I routinely have the oil changed and fittings greased with every oil change. I change oil every 3000 and usually before the computer tells me too. I also apply Fluid film to the under chasis to protech the truck from harmful side effects from road salt in winter. I started a thread about it with pictures in this part of the forum. Also use 93 octane only in my truck, sometimes 89, but never 87. Wash it once a week, apply rain X every other week to glass, and wax it annually. Also have it detailed once a year, well at least I try to have it done once a year, I am over due by a month now.

I garage my truck. I think that's key to keeping it looking good 5 years later. I keep it very clean. I change oil using full synthetic and the correct OEM filter every 5000 miles. Trans and diffs get changed at about 30K. Other than that I just drive it and replace wear items as needed. I've been doing this for years and had very good luck with all of my trucks.

It seems to me that greasing the upper and lower ball joints every 3k miles is an overkill. You risk damaging the boots by pumping too much grease in them.

 

I recommend washing your truck every week by hand and used about two tablespoons of ZipCar Wash in a bucket. It will keep your paint shiny for years if you regularly do it. It contains just enough wax to protect the paint for a few weeks without having to wax the truck. I have been using this product for years and results speak for themselves.

Probably not a bad idea to add a coat of good wax before Winter. Especially in colder climates.

I just waxed my truck with the Meguires Next Gen., so should be good for winter! Its too bad these trucks don't look new forever. But I'd like to do my best to keep it as new as possible for as long as possible.

 

I owned an '01 GMC 1500 Sierra, and I had to replace the front wheel bearings and it seems like they were pretty common to replace from what I hear. I guess I'd just like to grease and keep the parts as lubed and greased up, so I can get the fullest life out of the truck and its parts.

To start, I drive my truck 5000-6000 miles/year and garage it 99% of the time...

 

I change my oil with an AC-Delco filter and regular 5w-30 Pennzoil twice a year.

I flush and fill my tranny fluid with regular DEXRON III every 50k miles (once so far)

I wash the outside once every 2-3 months, and completely detail it to new (wax/engine/interior) once a year

 

I baby it obviously, and i can have it looking showroom clean in about 2-3 hours at any given time-engine and all. When I clean the interior, I remove all the stuff that can be removed without tools and completely clean the floor (I have a vinyl floor) even around the bolts under the seats.

Secondly, the best advice I can give you (besides washing/cleaning the truck regularly) is to read the manual. All the information you need about maintenance is in there.

Read the manual and follow it and you will not have any issues. It is amazing the questions asked on here that can be answered just by looking in the owners manual. Now granted it is way easier to ask here and get your post count up than flipping through the book.

I guess I didnt realize all the maintenance and everything I ever needed to know was all in the manual. I wasnt trying to be lazy, I didnt know the manual had everything I needed to know. And why the F**K would I need to raise my post count, I dont give a *&%$ about that.
