How To Rem/rep Mirror Glass Without Breaking

Recommended Posts

Both mirrors on my 01 suburban no longer remain fixed in either the inboard or outboard postions. The spring retainer has poped off the stud and now the mirrors just flop around and rattle. The adjustment motors still function and so does the heating feature. In order to reseat the spring and retainer, you must remove the glass. I am afraid of breaking either the glass or the snap tabs which hold the glass to the motor. Are there any tips on how to accomplish this safely? Or, should I give up and buy two new mirrors. Any and all hints are much appreciated. Thanks to all!

I had to remove the glass from the motor puck when I swapped out the plain mirrors to the signal equipped mirrors. I used a regular screwdriver with a piece of cloth wrapped around it.

This should help:

Thank you soo much for the prompt and accurate reply! Thank you also for the welcome to this forum! You have relieved all doubt as to my attempting to service these aging mirrors. I now feel confident that I will be able to save my originals without the added cost of aftermarket replacements. This is a great forum and you are one of the reasons why, thanks again!

I have a long, skinny hook tool (from Mac Tools) that worked perfectly to pop the clips off the puck to remove the mirror. It's pretty easy if you have someone to hold the light where it shines into the mirror housing so you can see what you are doing.
