Hi. I bought a '91 Chevy Silverado half ton 4x4 (Reg. cab shortbox 5.7 liter) from a kid for $250.

It doesn't run. I am going to pull the engine and swap in 1 from a '89 GMC Suburban 2 wheel drive 3/4 ton with a 5.7.

Question is. What are the HP ratings of the '91 Silverado vs the '89 GMC engines?

Sorry, I don't remember the exact numbers, but they both are right around 200hp.

I know in 95 the 350 had 205hp, and I believe almost all the TBI engines ranged from 180-210. They are not power houses by any means. But great reliable motors.

I know in 95 the 350 had 205hp, and I believe almost all the TBI engines ranged from 180-210. They are not power houses by any means. But great reliable motors.

My 89 Sierra had 220 (or 225?) HP.

Ok, Ok, my numbers are off a little. Like I said I can't remember the exact numbers I just know that they all are close to 200 give or take.

I doubt either of them at this point, unless they have been rebuilt, have what they did from the factory.

I wasn't "correcting" you Robert, I was simply stating what my 89 Sierra had for the OP. But his 89 is a Sub, so it may be different.

The engine you're pulling out of your K1500 made 210hp and 300 ft. lbs. of torque according to Auto Repair Reference Center, and the Suburban's should be making 190hp and 300 ft. lbs. of torque (at least if the 3/4 tons were rated above 8500 GVWR).

It's decent numbers none the less. The '91 will primarily see Plow duty and wood hauling duty.

I'm going to guess that the HP difference is in the cam.

If it's bolt on parts that'll increase the hp. I'd swap parts.

Yeah, the Suburban's peak power and torque is lower than the engine you're pulling out of the K1500. I guess I should have posted the rpm as well. Glad to be of help, hope everything works out correctly!

Well. The update on the engine swap is... Not gonna happen. At least not with the engine out of the Suburban. Neighbor tried to turn it over and it's locked up. So. I'll either look at finding a different engine or pull this 1 out of the '91 and hope the block is good.

Kid I bought it off of ran it out of oil and locked it up. Is it possible that the block is still good/

If so. Should I go with a stroker kit and if so.... Will the computer run a TBI stroker engine?

Just throwing it out. I'll pull it out and see if it can be salvaged. I doubt it would be a 4 bolt block. Or did they make them in '91?

Anyway..... Back @ square 1.

I do not think the light duty trucks saw a 4-bolt. If nothing went through the side, the block should still be good. A stroker would work in there, or if everything is still useable, a cleaned bore and new internals, with a better cam, will perform great for about $2500.

i believe you can still pick up a gm long block assembly with warranty for around $1500

I'll have to chat with the local engine shop. They are Chevy fans. Might be able to make decent HP cheap. Only have $250 in the whole truck. I'm just gonna plow snow and haul wood with it. Maybe tow with it on occasions.

It doesn't have to make stupid amounts of power. But I don't wanna drive a turd either.

Ohhh. BTW.

Can vortec heads bolt onto my year of block? I ask cause after I planned on buying the engine from the suburban. The neighbor bought a mid 90's Chevy. Has like 300,000 miles or so on it.

He planned on swapping stuff to make the suburban engine work in the chevy he bought.

Just curious. TIA
