Bf Goodrich Mud Terrains Blow Outs

Has anyone had blow outs on the highway with the BF Goodrich mud terrains in the stock sizes (245 75R16)? I just had two of them blow out (or exploded) two weekends ago within 20 miles of each other at highway speed (70 MPH). One of them ripped out my rear driver quarter panel. They only had 12,000 miles on them.... Additionaly, I checked the air pressure the night before....

Two? Within 20 miles? I haven't heard of blowouts on those tires, or really any tires in sometime. From what I understand, they are normally caused by excessive heat buildup caused by tire damage or low pressure. Even running with low pressure can damage a tire and cause it to blow later, with normal pressure. Which tires? Did you hit anything previously which might have damaged the tires?

The tires more or less exploded (sounded like a 50 caliber rifle going off).I checked the pressure and it was fine and the pressure was per the truck's side door decal. I did not hit anything. Those tires have seen only the beach sand. One tire was on the passenger side front and the other one is the driver side rear. It's going to cost me around 2000 dollars to fix the rear. The outside temp at the time was in the mid 50's and I was rolling at 70 MPH. I personally think there is a manufacturing defect of some sort. Additionally, my truck is 2wd.....I'm puzzled.

Star Customs has sold and serviced literally thousands of sets of BFG Mud and AT tires. Almost none have had problems. Once you get 4 that are round and balanced, blowouts are very uncommon on these tires (or at least have been up to now).

I had something similar happen some 15 years ago, but with a cheap General tire on a 1983 Pontiac Boneville. It happened at about 70 MPH too and the entire sidewall practically disintegrated on the tire. I was lucky I did not wreck the car, as it drifted across two lanes on I-95 following the blowout. The tire was almost brand new and properly inflated. Go figure.

I know you said only 12,000 miles, but what was the date of manufacture on the tires.

I had a nitto terra grappler that blew out on the sidewall on 3 spots from tread to the bead. Was wicked and only at like 35mph luckily. These also wore quicker than just about any tire I've ever bought. Were great offroad. But I would never buy them again unless I got mud grapplers on a strictly offroad vehicle. I've always had good luck mileage wise and everything with bfg a/t's and m/t's...

Did you keep the blown tires?

Check the lot numbers and see if the other 2 tires are also from the same lot. Get all 4 evaluated.

wow i have had many sets of bfg all different sizes and never even got a flat with them even with a lots of off 4 wheeling once i mounted them on the rims thats where they would stay until the tread was worn out....sounds like the x wife might have something to do with it

On my last set of BFG mud t/a's, I noticed a slight separation, on the inside, where the tire, is put together. When the tires were dismounted, I looked over the inside, and by appling pressure, on the tire. rolling it, you could see, the line, expand, at the sidewalls. The tires were 3-4 years old, with 40,000 miles, with 40 psi. If this set, does it to, I may be looking, for another brand, to buy. I did call BFG, about the tire pressure, and based on my truck and weight, and tire size, they recommended, 47 psi.

You wouldn't be putting the suggested door sticker pressure of 50 frt/80 rear

in a replacement NON -OE PASSENGER rated tire would you?

The puny 245 LTs that come as OE use the 50/80 pressures.

Many folks put on non OE "P" rated tires that should run 35 or so psi.

If you had P rated tires and were running 50/80 I could see why they

blew out.

Those tires have the load rating of an "E" range, which is no different than the original tire that came with the truck, which is also rated at "E". Addtionally, the tires have the same temp rating as the stock tires. Again, some might think those tires are "puny", but they do just well for what I do. The tires are at BFgoodrich for evaluation. My door sticker says 65 for front and 80 for back not 50/80.
