Well the company I work for shut down an entire shift, and cut the salaries of the ones left by 10%. So I am out of a job. It doesn't look like things will get better for a while, so I am going to the SS office this morning and put in for retirement. I will be 65 in July. I was trying to hold out but it don't look promising. I am already drawing a pension from General Electric. I may have to go to Wal-Mart and be a door greeter

may the force be with you, :uhoh:

I'm sorry to hear of your situation. If you could wait until you turn 65 you'd be better off moneywise. Can't you file for unemployment to help make it till July? But now that I think about with your pension, your filing for SS now might not make that much difference. Best to check all the options though, if you haven't already.

Good luck to us all.

That really sucks being laid off so close to retirement. I would definitely check what the difference in your SS would be taking it now or waiting till July. Sometimes it can be a significant difference. Darral's suggestion of trying to get unemployment till July is a good idea. But lots of good luck to you there Don.

Well I am officially retired. 66 was my full retirement age but there was only $172.00 a month difference between now and then. I got a severance pkg, plus I can draw unemployment and social security together. My wife works so I still got insurance.

Whoohoo, I am one lazy MF :uhoh:

sucks to have to get up every morning to go to work

Well, enjoy your retirement there Don! Now the challenge will be to figure out what to do with all your free time. :uhoh:
