Ok Guys, Really Need Your Help With New Tires

Recommended Posts

Well guys, i have been sitting for the past month trying to figure out which tires would look best on my stock Avalanche. It is a 05 White Z-71 without cladding and i have custom 7-spoke chrome, 20" wheels. I live in Michigan and I am only put my rims on for the spring/summer so wintery conditions are not an issue.

Anyway...I am deciding on either:

1.) Cooper Zeon LTZ's (285.50.r20) AGGRESSIVE STYLE

or

2.) General Grabber UHP (Same size) PERFORMANCE STYLE

I like the aggressive style of the Cooper but i'm not sure if it would look good. Price isnt a problem. Please help me out. Thanks fellas.

***Sorry, i should have posted a pic of my avalanche.....nonetheless, here it is. It was taken from my cell phone so quality isnt the best; i just got a new computer so i dont have any other pics at the moment. Thanks for the postings so far!

Hi there and welcome to GM Trucks! :dunno:

It's a hard call. Be prepared for as many opinions as there are people here. Both can look good. What kind of look are you looking for? A picture of you Av with the wheels could help.

Just in my opinion here. A truck with larger wheels, especially if chrome, a lower profile tire, and without a lift to the truck, a performance tire look really good. Whereas with a with a smaller non-chrome wheel, with a higher profile tire, a tire with a more aggressive tread looks better.

where are you from and are these summer only tires?

Around here, if this was your only set of wheels/tires the choice would be easy.... go Coopers that way you're prepared for bad weather during the winter.

I have the coopers and really like them. I'd definitely get them again :dunno:

Now as far as looks are concerned... i think an AT tire would look better on an avalanche. I dont think avalanches pull off the "sport" truck look as good as tahoes and such, and therefore think the sport tires might look out of place and the AT tire would look better, even in the same size/wheel combo

Post pics! they always help

Where does the OP live?

I have/had a set of coopers on an 04 sierra and they are the crappiest tires I think I have ever seen in the snow. I got stuck at a Lowe's at the dang light as I couldn't move forward in packed snow. I took the two rears off that had half the life left and put on General Grabbers (#1 rated at Tire Rack and Consumer Reports) and had no problem on ice or snow in the two weeks after that. Once I get my new tie rods and alignment I am putting the grabbers on the front as well.

which model of coopers do you have, the Zeon LTZs?

We just got hit with one hell of a snow storm last weekend so i got to test out the LTZs in snow and i was very impressed, they even held traction side-to-side when i purposely tried to slide out (to get persepective of how they'd handle on an on-ramp for the highway)

where in Michigan do you live, I'm up in Cadillac. I've got the same scenario, running summer rims/tires and then stockers for the winter. if you want to stick with the lower profile tires I can't help you with an opinion. if you want to step up to a taller tire, look into 275/55/20's (about 32" stock size) or 275/60/20's (they're a full 33" tire). I've got my set sitting in the basement waiting for all the snow to melt away and salt to wash off the roads.

anyways good to have another Michigander on here. hope where you're at is fairing better than we are here. freezing rain transitioning into 6" of snow tonight.

Yeah, i'm from the Frankenmuth Area. We got buckets of rain and even some thunder today so spring is on its way i hope! I was actually debating between the 275/55 and the 285/50 Zeon LTZ's. I like that the 275/55's are taller but i dont know if i would rather have the wider 285's. I have 285/50/20 Goodyear GT II's on now and i like the fit, but those are not aggressive like the Zeons so i cant say for sure. The Avalanches ride much lower in the front than the back (which is silly, especially for the Z-71's) so that makes me think the 275's would be too tall. Do you have any pics of your truck with the wheels/tires??? That could help me out probably. Anyway, thanks for the advice and stay warm!
