Vararam Intake? Claims 25-50 Horse Gain!

link gives me an error, but i say there's NO WAY a CAI gives 25-50 hp. more than likely it's just marketing hype. expect 3-5hp at the crank at most. and that's optimistic.

edit: if THIS is what you're after, i call BS.

it's interesting, but with the amount of CLAIMED air being put into the engine. I honestly don't know how the ECM could compensate without a tune. I don't know too much about air-fuel ratios but it's common sense when it claims that much air flow

A real world +25-50HP* (depending on engine size and if a programmer is used) 3-5tenth of a improvements on 0-60mph runs ,without the use of a programmer. With a programmer you will see even more! 1/4mile improvements of 3 tenths and 3mph are the norm! Fuel mileage improvements of +1-3mpg

this is a quote from their site. a lot of these aftermarket companies manipulate the fact that if you stack their product with additional upgrades (in this case a 'programmer'...a.k.a. a tune) you'll get 25+ HP. it's just marketing bullshit.

I had a friend that put their product on his Hemi. *cough...* I know, I said friend and Hemi in the same sentance...you know, keep your friends close and enemies closer?

Anyways, fairly snappy engine from the get go. 4.10 gears probably help, but either way that little 5.7 loves high revs. He put his Dodge "under glass" kinda reminiscent of old muscle Mopars and such. It was a fancy CAI kit they offer. After installation, you can put your hand in front of the air horns and just sitting still with the motor revved up you can feel the air being pulled into the massive air horns. At highway speeds if you get too stupid with the fun button it will get squirlly on the asphalt. He does not have any other kind of performance parts on this truck at all, just a fancy air intake system. His fuel economy has not gotten fantastically better (Dodge...duh) but this thing loves having a little more air rammed down its throat.

Would I consider putting it on my Chev? Tell ya what...anyone with a few hundred bucks they want to throw my way I will give you a very honest real life opinion of the Vararam Cold Air Intake after I drive the pi$$ out of it for a while!

It's certainly tempting....but Im gonna stick with my Airaid Jr. and upcoming blackbear tune for now. Who knows what $ i may have to blow somewhere down the road though! haha

Adding a quality CAI is only part of the HP equation, because in order to "inhale" more air into your engine you also need to be able to "exhale" more air. By adding a CAI you are essentially adding the potential to flow more air, but the amount of air you flow depends on the total system; air filter system, throttle body, Intake, displacement, cam, exhaust, and computer tune. The total flow through the entire system is governed by the most restrictive component in the system, so you may not get any gains from just installing a CAI if it was not the most restrictive component. The easiest things we can do to to increase your engines volumetric efficiency is to add a quality CAI, CAT back Exhaust, and get a performance tune (BB Tune preferably).

I was reading on the Dodge Magnum/Charger forum where a bunch of the members got together and bought 5 different CAI systems and dyno tested all five under similar conditions on the same vehicle and they found that not one boosted there HP one bit! What this tells me is the stock air filter system was not the most restrictive part of this combustion system. That is why many manufactures state "your results may vary", because every vehicle is different.

I'm not saying adding a CAI system is a bad idea, but is just one part of the HP equation. I am getting ready for a BB tune this Sunday and I've added a Banks Ram-Air CAI and a Banks Monster Exhaust in preparation for this tune. When my wallet recovers I may decide to add the Banks headers to further enhance exhaust flow. As you can tell I'm a fan of Banks Engineering products. They do extensive testing to verify there products perform as they say, by not only flow bench testing, but also dyno testing on the vehicles they are designed for. Banks does so much testing that they are not afraid to test there products against other manufactures products and then share there findings. They compared their CAI against many other manufactures CAI systems and they showed that many actually were worse than the stock system that was removed.

First off, it says 25-50, so right off the bat you have to think it's 25.

Second, it says on the page "Depends on engine size and if a programmer is used"

I wouldn't put much faith in this, especially with the amount of flex tubing it uses.

I would go with the banks if I was doing this, especially because they don't seem to make blanket HP gain claims!

Looks like a good idea but I dont know about those gains. Id be interested to see a dyno sheet.

Looking at the way the kit works I would believe it possible. It looks like a ram air style kit which would mean as you go faster you will pressurize the intake even more which would act sort of like a turbo. This is the same principle that many of the sportbikes use to build power.

Makes me want to try and install an electric fan on my truck.
